Very depressing

"Niko" is in the same universe as the author's prior novel, "Aran," which was a 4 to 5 star effort. In this PNR, the main character is a massively depressed young lady who has more issues than you can shake a stick at. She wants 1-night stands, a lot of them, and no committed relationships. We get a lot of pages reading her mentally picking her boy toy for the night. Personally, this was an "ick" factor for me. I don't mind the guy having the morals of an alley cat if he stops the behavior when the book starts, but in "Niko" we get to listen to all the gory details.
The plot: depressed lady with no self confidence is being pursued by the perfect man: patient, kind, helpful, loyal, forgiving, non-judgmental, rich, protective, cute, and single. Think of a positive attribute and he has it. Personally, I don't like this romance plot, but I could have put up with it if the leading lady was at all sympathetic. Alas, she is not at all sympathetic. Listening to her constant complaints got really old, and I cannot understand why Niko wants anything to do with her. The "its a paranormal thing" can be sexy, but not when the attraction is this unbelievable.
At half way through the book, we are still slogging through her negative emotions & behavior. I gave up and skipped to the end, which focuses on the book's other subplot: an uninspired alien intrigue with a secret enemy attacking our heroes. There is also a lot of set-up for the next book, which I actively dislike. It gave the ending too much of a cliffhanger feeling, even though the romance plot was resolved.
The writing itself is good, with high quality scene descriptions, a only few grammar errors (e.g., there & their switched), and good kindle formatting. The leading lady is African American and the other characters a mix of races but no racial tension, bias, or insults. This is rare enough to be enjoyable and appreciated.

Really good story

Wow, this was great. It pulled me in right from the start. I felt Niko lost his hard edged alpha persona quickly and never got it back but the real main character was more the heroine who had a true rough edge which wasn't whitewashed although of course she has a heart of gold. Some parts are not clear and coherent which could be straightened out by a good editor. Definitely two thumbs up.

Short and sweet

Niko and Dee seemed like a great match. It started off a bit like he was stalking her, watching her every move and making sure she was okay. He is one of the brothers of the created. Dee is spunky vibrant woman who has an extensive history of abuse at the hands of her mother and her mother's random lovers. I will not give away anything else, but I will say that I enjoyed how Niko was patient and loving with Dee, he gave just right amount of both in order to allow her to open her heart. I am looking forward to reading about Sergey's story.
