Somewhat Unusual

The book contains some good information but I didn't really care for the style of writing. It's written as if there was a job interview taking place. Questions are listed and for each, the writer prints the answer they would provide on an actual interview. Many of the answers were good but sometimes specific hardware and/or software brands, that the writer has used in the past, were given and I don't agree with the author that these brands are the only ones that should be used. This basically left those question unanswered in my opinion. Also, there is a fairly lengthy section for answering non-technical questions, such as "What are your biggest strengths and weaknesses". I don't believe that needed to be included in the book. This was not a terrible book, so if this sounds like the kind of book you would like, you might want to check it out.

About the Author

Karl Taro Greenfeld is the author of seven previous books, including the novel Triburbia and the acclaimed memoir Boy Alone. His award-winning writing has appeared in Harper's Magazine, The Atlantic, The Paris Review, Best American Short Stories 2009 and 2013, and The PEN/O. Henry Prize Stories 2012. Born in Kobe, Japan, he has lived in Paris, Hong Kong, and Tokyo, and currently lives in Pacific Palisades, California, with his wife, Silka, and their daughters, Esmee and Lola.

Greenfeld has created a dark, funhouse mirror reflection of our current world

Some people may have already forgotten about Occupy Wall Street, but Karl Taro Greenfeld certainly hasn’t. In his biting, satirical second novel --- dedicated to the 99% --- he’s envisioned a near-future America where the gap between the haves and have-nots has become a chasm. The migrant poor, or subprimes, live in squatter’s camps called Ryanvilles or are shipped off to modern-day debtors’ prisons known as “Credit Rehabilitation Centers.” Virtually all government functions have been privatized; one character’s son attends the Subway Fresh Take Paul Revere Charter Middle School. Minimum wage? Outlawed under the National Right to Work Act. Environmental regulations? Abolished. It’s an exaggerated but not entirely unbelievable version of the current political and economic landscape, where the 1% just keep getting richer while the rest of America suffers.

Perhaps the biggest casualty of “this climactic age of American capitalism” is political dissent, which is virtually nonexistent. The few who don’t like the way things are going have either retreated into cynicism or have, as in the case of one character, “withdrawn, totally, into her own self, via yoga and juice cleanses and shaman therapy and picayune specificity of the foods she will put into her body.” The subprimes, who have the most reason to revolt, are totally cowed. Their main concerns are avoiding the credit police and scraping out a meager existence as day laborers for powerful corporations like those owned by Dottie and Dorrie Pepper, twin sisters who are like the evil siblings of the Koch brothers.

Still, a few subprimes hold out hope for a better life, coming together to build a tiny settlement among the abandoned tract homes that dot the Nevada desert. Valence has communal agriculture, free schools and dance parties. And soon, it has an unlikely resident messiah. Sagram has “been wandering her whole life,” ever since fleeing a foster home as an adolescent. She rides a motorcycle, dresses in white leathers, and is unsure of her race and exact birthday (“Thirty?” she responds, when someone asks her age). Most suspiciously, she doesn’t have a credit score. But her apartness gives her the freedom to speak truth to power. “She said she was everything, all of it, people and countries and ideas and dreams all rolled into one so that she could dream bigger and talk louder and fight harder than all the rest.”

Sagram’s foil is Pastor Roger, a celebrity preacher whose mega-church has taken over what used to be the Dallas Cowboys stadium. In his sermons he spreads an extreme version of the prosperity gospel, twisting the tenets of Christianity to serve capitalism. He urges his followers to “fight the forces of repression and regulation and socialism and progressivism who would seek to usurp God’s will by cutting off his invisible hand.” Sagram, in contrast, offers a return to a purer form of faith. Her message is not explicitly religious, yet her words seem more in line in with Biblical teachings than Pastor Roger’s sermons. “We do not want to fight --- we only ask of the government to be treated as all people should be treated,” she says when an army of private security forces arrives to evict the residents of Valence.

Given the dystopian setting of THE SUBPRIMES, it seems like the novel should be bleak and depressing, and at times it is. The dozens of whales who have beached themselves on the shores of both New York and California serve as a powerful, if obvious, sign that all is not right with the planet. But the novel’s serious message is leavened with humor and hope. Greenfeld takes great joy in envisioning the logical yet absurd conclusions of certain current trends in American politics and culture. You can call an ambulance, but the paramedic will check your credit score before he takes you to the hospital.

Greenfeld has created a dark, funhouse mirror reflection of our current world --- a sobering vision of what America might look like if certain right-wing elements had their way. Yet he’s optimistic enough to predict a way out of this mess, showing how a return to traditional community and mutual support might break “the fever spell of greed.” We may not be living in the world of THE SUBPRIMES just yet, but Greenfeld’s novel is a pointed warning that such a future may not be all that far off.

Greenfeld's comic cli-fi with serious undertones continues an enduring and endearing USA and UK comic literary tradition

'The Subprimes' is an American comic 'cli-fi' novel, with legs, in the tradition of Nathaniel Rich's equally comic "Odds Against Tomorrow" (and Ian McEwan's comic UK cli-fi novel "Solar") and it's both funny and penetratingly serious. Greenfeld is the son of a Hollywood screenwriter and a Japanese novelist and was blessed with the writerly genes he inherited from both his parents. This comic novel is a light comedy about weighty subjects: wealth inequality, environmental devastation, the erosion of democratic representation, the creation of a hereditary moneyed class, and the disastrous false consciousness of the American populace, as one pundit put it.

It’s a road-trip novel (actually, it’s several road-trip novels, having many point-of-view characters) set in a near-future plutocratic, climate-wracked America. With a deeply-focused mind and a comic sense of humor, Greenfeld has mined "The Subprimes" as a kind of Swiftian satire and where America is today, or will be in a rapidly-approaching near future. Like Nathaniel Rich's 2013 cli-fi satire "Odds Against Tomorrow," which almost single-handedly set the cli-fi genre on its meteoric rise after a NPR radio segment lit up social media from coast to coast, Greenfeld's comic take (with serious undertones) is a must-read, continuing an enduring and endearing American and British comic literary tradition and this time in the cli-fi mode.

Some things are funny because they're way overdone

Some things are funny because they're way overdone, but that's always a difficult thing to get right. "Subprimes" envisions a dystopian America where conservative politics have gotten just about everything they've always wanted. Environmental regulations have been stripped away, labor protections reduced to nothing, the schools privatised. There's no health care if you have no money, and the hospitals run your credit score before they even look at you. The main bad guys are some preacher and two stand-ins for the Koch brothers called the Pepper sisters. And everybody who lost their home in the subprime crisis are homeless and living squats called "Ryanvilles". And subprimes keep moving around all the time because they can be arrested and thrown into debtor's prison at any time.

It's a scathing indictment of modern conservatism. I think of myself a pretty liberal, so I'm just fine with that aspect. It's just by making the conservatives so extreme, they become straw men, they're not believable characters. Maybe the author was going for the "way-over-the-top" satire style, but for my tastes, never quite made it there. It just got too preachy.

Still liked the book, though.

A Monumental Important Cookbook!

This cookbook is an education unto itself. If you want to learn about foods that will benefit your health and fitness, then buy this book. The mark of a truly good person is someone who imparts a wisdom in you that you were never aware of. The author, Julie Morris, is an extremely knowledgable and creative food mastermind. Couple this book with her Superfood Smoothies book and you'll have a new path to your own well-being. Brilliant and beautiful book!

Great Healthy Recipes

The author is really great at introducing a very healthy lifestyle with recipes that feature foods filled with Omega-3s, Omega-6s and Omega-9s. the recipes are flavorful and tasty. Some are easier to make than others. Some ingredients can be expensive but it just means that you may have to hunt for more reasonably priced suppliers but the author provides a list of suppliers for some of the ingredients in her recipes. If you are looking for recipes that will provide you with energy and benefit your body from your skin to your hair to your nails, as well as your internal parts then this recipe book should be on your shelf. These recipes are built with very solid and extremely healthy ingredients. If you are looking to improve the quality of your health and if you are looking for energy then this book is for you.

Big fan of Julie's

This was my first Julie Morris book, but I will get them all. Her recipes are creative and very tasty. The book I keep front and center in my kitchen is her Superfood Juice, as I am an avid juicer. Superfood Kitchen fills a hole in kitchens today because it combines healthy and quick. When I get home from work, I am just "done". It is hard to think creatively nor do I want to spend a lot of time preparing. Great book.

Smart, laugh out loud antidote to HGTV overload

Finally! An hilarious, clever, smart person's manual for the insane adventure called homeownership. As a recovering HGTV addict, and a new home owner, reading this book helped me feel like I am not alone in my attempt to creatively deal with the REAL reality that is setting up house. HGTV 1-2-3 house hunting and one hour reno before and afters numb us with their lack of humor and pathos. Cox writes as though her life depends on it-there's no turning back after signing on that dotted line-her way with words, timing and subject matter force you to feel the funny and the oh too real in everything from major emergencies to minor but just as anxiety provoking tasks as dealing with endless amounts of daily chores. Wry yet determinedly cheerful, Cox leads us into her wacky world and helps us out of our post-purchase shock or mid-reno haze. The cherry on top is artist Rob Strati's clean and perfectly fitting cover graphic. Just signed up for Cox's HomeTome Blog. Keep those posts coming my way! Can't get enough.

Charming and Witty

This book is very charming and witty and will make you think back on and laugh at all of the crazy homeowner experiences you've had. Helpful to get a laugh out of the things that usually cause us so much stress! This would be a funny housewarming gift or a gift to a friend of yours who is currently undergoing house trama. Note: the book is short which means you go through it quickly (thus 4 stars instead of 5, although some might think that's actually more of a positive than a negative).

It's the first book you'll pick up right after a household debacle, just to laugh first (and then call the plumber). Great addition to the Office bookshelf with something for everyone

I enjoyed this book's relaxed style and the brisk but effective coverage of key Excel areas. Topics range from entering formulas through to an excellent section on the complex topic of macros. There are plenty of practical examples which can be applied to real-world problems, together with frank discussions of the pitfalls you may come across.

There are also comprehensive lists of functions and shortcut keys, and tips which the author has gathered over a lifetime of working with Excel.

Make sure you register the book (steps are on a page almost at the back of the book, after the index) to get access to all the accompanying data files - particularly useful for the Pivot Table and Power Map sections.

Overall, a very good reference book on the latest version of Microsoft Excel.

FANTASTIC EXCEL 2016 REFERENCE!!!!

Are you a hard-core Excel 2016 user? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Bill Jelen, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that shows Excel 2016’s full power and updated interface.

Author Jelen, begins by explaining the new features in Excel 2016 and a few important features that you might have missed if you upgraded directly from Excel 2010 to Excel 2016. Then, the author shows you how to use the Excel user interface. He continues by walking you through examples of customizing the ribbon and discusses some of the important option settings available to Excel. Then, the author points out which of the old Excel 2003 keyboard shortcuts still work, shows you some new shortcuts, and introduces you to the keyboard accelerators. He then shows you how to understand and calculate formulas. Next, the author explains the finer points of formula operators, date math, and how Excel distinguishes between cutting and copying cells referenced in formulas. He continues by introducing you to Excel 2016’s five new forecast functions, which are being used by the new Forecast Sheet command. Then, the author describes the functions that you can access with the Formulas tab by using the Text icon, the Date & Time icon, and the Math portion of the Math & Trig icon. He then covers four groups of workhouse functions. Next, the author provides a reference to functions from the Web, Financial, Statistical, Trigonometry, Matrix, and Engineering functions. He continues by showing you how to do the following: Connect two worksheets; connect two workbooks; and, manage links between workbooks. Then, the author shows you how to use the Name Manager interface to assign and use names effectively. He then introduces you to the tools available in Power Query; as well as, traditional tools such as Sort, Filter, Remove Duplicates, and Flash Fill. Next, the author shows you how to summarize data by using subtotals or filter. He continues by showing you how use pivot tables to slice and dice your data in almost any imaginable way. Then, the author shows you how to perform ad-hoc analysis by choosing various items from various fields in the pivot table. He then shows you how anyone with Excel 2016 can build pivot tables from multiple tables. Next, the author discusses some of the Excel 2016’s features that are helpful when you are trying to find a specific answer. He continues by showing you how to edit recorded macro code, so that you can then record a macro that is close to what you want and edit that macro to create something that runs the way you want it to work. Then, the author looks at miscellaneous tips and tricks for Excel 2016. He then looks at how to format documents in Excel 2016 with the following three methods: Use tables styles; use cell styles; and, use formatted commands. Next, the author shows you a few tricks on how to set up basic conditional formatting. He continues by covering some general techniques for creating graphs. Then, the author discusses how to use 3D Map within Excel 2016. Finally, he shows you how to use sparklines.

In addition, the author has also done a fantastic job with this excellent book, by showing you some tips on how to create a workbook model and print it in Excel 2016. Also, within this great book, you have learned many useful things that you can do with Excel online, by viewing and editing your workbooks in a browser.

It is like twilight that is made for mature women bursting with flavour.

This book is creative, funny, perfect in every sense. It fills your head with emotion, engulfing your sense of touch and smell.
It is perfect for those laid back days where you just lie down on your bed with a glass of red wine, with a little jazz music playing in the background. I highly recommend this book or maybe its bundle set.

Fun Christmas book with beautiful illustrations

This book begins with a girl writing a letter to Santa. She hasn't finished the letter so we don't see what she's asked for. A few pages later she sees the gifts by the Christmas tree; one small, one medium and one large. When she opens the gifts the small one contains a real cat, the medium one contains a real dog, and the large box houses a real pony. Then we see her play with her new friends in the snow; sledding, making snow angels and snowmen, having a snow ball fight and then curling up by the fire place at the end of the day. The only words in this story are in the letters the girl writes to Santa at the beginning and the end of the book. The illustrations are beautiful and funny at the same time. Great book!

Delightful! - A Very Special Christmas Wish Comes True

In this nearly wordless picture book, a little girl named Sammy writes Santa a letter. Christmas morning arrives and she finds three wrapped gifts (one small, one medium and one large) under the tree. The gifts contain three living animals ... a cat, a dog and a miniature horse! Lonely no more, Sammy and her new animal friends spend their winter days making snow angels, throwing snowballs, building snow creatures, sledding, and baking cookies.

Donovan's book is a fun-filled, imaginative read about a very special Christmas wish that comes true. The adorable scenarios depicted in the painted illustrations are pure fun and kids will delight in the whimsy. For instance, all the animals sleep nestled together under the covers in the little girl's bed. And, my kids loved the cookie baking scene where the horse makes horseshoe-shaped cookies while the cat cuts out fish shapes. For toddlers, the book provides an opportunity to discuss sizes and because it is wordless, they can make up their own story to accompany the pictures. The author based the animals in the book on her own pets, a Siamese cat named Maylee, a Chesapeake Bay retriever named Grizzly and a miniature horse named Fern.

A darling book for my kindergarteners. They are learning English so I was able to discuss these beautiful pictures in detail with size as the main objective for the first read. After a second or third opening of the book the students could tell the story in their own words, making predictions, and assumptions based on these wonderful illustrations. I think anyone will enjoy this book, not just kids.
