About the Author
BYUNGCHO CHOI is a professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Kyungpook National University, Daegu, Korea. He received his PhD from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia. Over the past twenty years, Dr. Choi has been teaching and doing research in the area of PWM DC-to-DC power conversion.

A welcomed addition

Update (Nov. 06, 2013): The publisher has released the final answers on its website to most of the problems set in the textbook. This is very commendable as these answers will help any reader to have more confidence in the subject and the reader will then most likely keep the book for future reference as well. The PSpice codes have also been added on the book's website at Wiley. There are compatibility issues between PSpice and the free LT Spice but the reader can still open the PSpice codes within LT Spice.

This book by Choi is indeed a welcomed addition to this field. DC-to-DC power conversion is a necessity for example in drives. Chopping to produce a pulse width modulated signal is pervasive. The author Choi tries to be very pedagogic and makes the book to be suitable for senior undergraduate students or to those having a little background in electricity, electronics and possibly in control systems as well. While the book provides additional materials such as lecture slides on Wiley's website, I do not currently see the PSpice codes that were supposed to be on Wiley's website as well. That said, I would have preferred to see these PSpice codes integrated within the text as then it would have been easy for a reader to follow the example simulations given in the textbook. The author could have also chosen the free LT Spice over the PSpice (as far as I know, LT Spice and PSpice are not compatible with each other).
Furthermore, answers to the end-of-chapter problems are also not provided in the textbook and instead are available from the publisher. This can impede the learning process of those who are trying to study the textbook on their own. I would urge the author and the publisher to consider making accessible at least the answers of Chapter 2 on Wiley's website since any reader who cannot understand Chapter 2 well will have serious difficulties in moving forward in the textbook. Mechanical engineers who are trying to read this book will need a background in low-frequency electromagnetics in order to go through Chapter 2.
The text flows easily with a clean layout. However I remarked that the author very scarcely refers to the other parts of the textbook. This is not a serious flaw but it seems a bit unusual in a textbook. All in all, I do believe that the author has provided specialised information on this subject matter while trying to make the book accessible to undergraduate students as well. Due to the freshness of the textbook's contents, I am giving it a rating of 4. And for the reader who is looking for additional materials in a broader context, I recommend the all-round book: "Switching Power Supply Design" by Pressman et al.
