When Lance Roven, a programmer living in Hong Kong, is called back home to his grandfather’s deathbed, his grandfather asks Lance to handle the contents of a safe deposit box and then does something Lance can’t believe – he speaks Chinese. This sets Lance off on a trail of clues, following an old map to Taiwan where he meets Annie Lee, a museum researcher. Together they work to uncover a secret buried for 60 years while racing against Chinese spies to find a treasure and forgotten WWII treaty that could reignite a civil war. The Jade Lady explores the intricate history between the US, Taiwan and China, and the "other cold war" that has existed in the East since the late 1940's with a page-turning plot that will satisfy fans of both thrillers and historical fiction.

A Fun Mystery That Explores Taiwanese History
By Travel Fan
Let me start by saying I'm not typically a reader of mysteries, but I checked this one out on the recommendation of a friend and I'm glad I did. The Jade Lady differentiates itself from the host of The Da Vinci Code rip-offs flooding Amazon right now with its three dimensional protagonist and exploration of the little discussed history of Taiwan. Wayland's laid back, clever prose make this one a quick and satisfying read as well, with a few laugh out loud moments.
I really enjoyed how the first part of the book delves deeply into both Lance's personal history as a kid growing up in the Arizona desert and his current life working as a computer programmer in Hong Kong. As someone who once taught English abroad I thought this characterization of an US ex-pat in Asia was spot on.
The latter section of the novel focuses on Lance's adventures in Asia, aided by the beautiful Taiwanese historian, Annie Lee. This is where the book really separates itself from the crowd. The mystery story at its core--what was Lance's grandfathers involvement with Chinese spies during WWII and what is so important about the document that Lance, Annie, and the spies themselves are searching for in present day Taiwan?--is used as a jumping off point to delve further into the history of Taiwan, the current state of Taiwan-China relations and even offer a concrete view of what the solution to this real-life Cold War should be (something that anyone familiar with the situation will know most authors skirt around in fear of inviting Chinese anger or censorship).
This one comes highly recommended for lovers of the spy/mystery genre, former and current ex-pats, and anyone interested in learning more about the often overlooked island nation of Taiwan.

Interesting story with Chinese history
By Amazon Customer
For me this story is well written. I did not have any formatting issues on a Kindle Paperwhite. I enjoy fiction that has history as part of the story. The Jade Lady involves a short history of turbulent times in China. If a mystery not involving a professional such as a PI, detective, FBI, CIA,,, but a average person then you will enjoy this story.

A Great Adventure!
By Gryphon23
I really enjoyed this novel from start to finish. It was an addicting read, and kept me hooked with suspension from the end of the first chapter. The author is knowledgeable about the cultures and histories he touches on. The information about Taiwan and the political situation there, as well as the scenes in Taipei, were really well done. An excellent read. I hope to see more from Mr. Wayland in the future!
