Letting go isn't easy, but Del Lawrence's SOUL TIES reminds us it is sometimes necessary

There's nothing like feeling as though you're in a relationship of any kind where what you bring to the table is not appreciated or valued.

In Del Lawrence's book SOUL TIES: How to Detox from Toxic Relationships we see how though it may be difficult it is crucial that we separate ourselves from those who don't mean us well.

I love the brutally honest and real way that Del shares the information,letting us know that we have to be able to bring the best of ourselves to the world each and every day, and we can't do that when we are in a situation that is poisonous and draining us of our time and efforts. He says there are three things we must do during our 'detox' from a toxic relationship: Forgive, forget and 'faith' it. What does faith have to do with it? Del writes this: "We have to take our lives seriosly if we truly want to live a quality life free from the stain of pain from our past and imperfections of our present. We can faith our future and do the necessary work that is required to produce such a life if we take the initiative and follow these action steps to accomplish a thorough detox.
(p.36,37)

Del also shares that just like food can sour on you so can relationships, so we have to be careful what we hold on to and what we make a part of ourselves. "Have enough love for yourself that you don't allow people to disrespect you or God by treating you how they hurt rather than how you hoped.," he writes on page 62. " This means that we have to continually be on guard that we don't give in to situations and relationships that bring us more harm than good.

A Bear's shadow is a nice story

There are about twenty-eight pages with each one being of white background with various square sizes of the illustrations in blue, green, brown and white colors. This makes the picture a separate box and the text below or next to the picture.

The bear is a brown bear that starts the day by fishing at the pond. Bear notices a big fish while hooking the worm onto his pole and wants to catch it. The bear stood up to toss his pole in the water but his shadow scared the fish away. The bear tried to tell his shadow to go away but it stayed there. Since the shadow would not leave the Bear decided he would run until the shadow disappeared. The Bear ran around the pond, through a field of flowers and then jumped over a brook ending up hiding behind a tree.

Next the Bear went home to get a hammer and nails to nail his shadow to the ground but the shadow did not go down. Then the Bear got out a shovel thinking he could bury the shadow in a deep hole. By the time Bear finished filling the hole up it was afternoon with the sun high in the sky but no shadow to be found. After all this hard work Bear went inside to take a nap awakening after the sun had set. Bear went to open his front door and there was his shadow on the floor so he quickly shut the door going outside and hoping to leave his shadow inside.

It turned out his shadow was too quick because it was outside the door with the Bear. Now the Bear decided that if the shadow would let him catch a fish he would let the shadow get one too and when he nodded his head so did his shadow. Back to the pond the Bear goes again but this time the sun is in another part of the sky so the shadow was able to steer clear of scaring the fish. This time the shadow was behind the Bear while in the morning the shadow was in front of him closer to the pond. At the end of the day the Bear and his shadow caught their big fish.

My six-year old likes to play around with shadows on the wall in the house plus loves bears so this is a book that gets read quite often. I would suggest a toddler to first grader would benefit from the silliness of the bear and his shadow.

Very Cute, Holds Interest

My son loved this book! He even knew what would happen next and laughed and enjoyed seeing how silly bear was by trying to bury his own shadow. This was an excellent book, not too long, not too short and he will look forward to reading it by himself this year when he learns to read.

About the Author
"PATRICK W. SHANNON, PH.D." is Professor of Production and Operations Management in the College of Business and Economics at Boise State University. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in business statistics, quality management, and production and operations management. In addition, Dr. Shannon has lectured and consulted in the statistical analysis and quality management areas for over 20 years. Listed among his consulting clients are Boise Cascade Corporation, Hewlett-Packard; PowerBar, Inc.; Potlatch Corporation; Woodgrain Millwork, Inc.; J.R. Simplot Company; Zilog Corporation; and numerous other public- and private-sector organizations. Professor Shannon has co-authored several university-level textbooks and has published numerous articles in such journals as "Business Horizons, Interfaces, Journal of Simulation, Journal of Production and Inventory Control, Quality Progress," and "Journal of Marketing Research." He obtained B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Montana and a Ph.D. in Statistics and Quantitative Methods from the University of Oregon.

"DAVID F. GROEBNER" is a Professor of Production Management and Chairman of the Department of Computer Information Systems and Production Management at Boise State University. He has bachelor's and master's degrees in Engineering and a Ph.D. in Business Administration. After working as an engineer, he has taught statistics and related subjects for 27 years. In addition to writing textbooks and academic papers, he has worked extensively with both small and large organizations, including Hewlett-Packard, Boise Cascade, Albertson's, and Ore-Ida. He has worked with numerous government agencies, including Boise Cityand the U.S. Air Force.

"PHILLIP C. FRY" is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Information Systems and Production Management in the College of Business and Economics at Boise State University, where he has taught since 1988. Phil received his B.A. and M.B.A degrees from the University of Arkansas, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Louisiana State University. His teaching and research interests are in the areas of business statistics, production management, and quantitative business modeling. In addition to his academic responsibilities, Phil has consulted with and provided training to small and large organizations, including Boise Cascade Corporation; Hewlett-Packard Corporation; The J.R. Simplot Company; United Water of Idaho; Woodgrain Millwork, Inc.; Boise City; and Micron Electronics.

Phil spends most of his free time with his wife Susan, to whom he has been married for 18 years, and his four children, Phillip Alexander, age 8, Alejandra Johanna, age 7, and twins, Courtney Rene and Candace Marie, age 1.

"KENT D. SMITH" received a Ph.D. in Applied Statistics from the University of California, Riverside in 1981. He holds a Master of Science degree in Statistics from the University of California, Riverside and a Master of Science degree in Systems Analysis from the Air Force Institute of Technology. His Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics was obtained from the University of Utah. Dr. Smith has served as a University Statistical Consultant at the University of California, Riverside and at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. While at the University of California, he served as a consultant for the Biometrical Services Unit of theBiometrical Project at the University of California, Riverside. His private consulting has ranged from serving as an expert witness in legal cases, survey sampling for corporations and private researchers, medical and orthodontic research, and assisting graduate students with analysis required for master and doctoral degrees in various disciplines.

Dr. Smith began teaching as a part-time lecturer at the California State University, San Bernardino. While completing his doctoral dissertation, he served as a lecturer at the University of California, Riverside. Currently, he is a Professor of Statistics at the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, one of the minority of universities that offer an undergraduate degree in statistics. The subjects he teaches include upper-division courses in regression, analysis of variance, nonparametrics, linear models, and probability and mathematical statistics, as well as a full array of service courses.

Start with 2 Day DBA Instead

If you are specifically looking for Oracle certification, it's a good book. If you are looking to learn Oracle database administration, there are plenty of good/better free resources available. See the Oracle 2 Day DBA website for starters. That has practical explanations and hands-on tutorials using Enterprise Manager Database Control. This book has more of an SQL*Plus (command) focus. Look at this book after the 2 Day DBA resources if you want more detail.

What you need to pass the exam *and* learn the basics of administering Oracle

This is an extremely comprehensive book -- both from the standpoint of the 1Z0-052 certification test and in terms of the fundamental knowledge that an Oracle DBA needs to have. It does not simply lay out information about the exam topics in isolation but provides background and details that pull everything into context. It's the context that an Oracle DBA needs to have in order to be able to make use of the information in a work environment. Passing the test is obviously a primary aim of anyone reading this book. However, for those just starting out in Oracle, the foremost goal of the certification process should be learning how to become a DBA. This book has the information that will help you to do both.

The proofreading issues mentioned by the other reviewers exist. However, they constitute a tiny fraction of the book, and few of the errors impact exam questions. Despite this, be sure to read the errata available on the McGraw Hill web site. To put the errors in perspective -- assume that you use this book to study for the test (without ever checking the errata). If you get every question right where the book provides the correct information, and get every question wrong where there is an error, you would likely miss two or three questions and 'only' pass with 95-97%. Reading the book doesn't guarantee that you'll pass the test. You may fail to understand the information or fail to retain it. However, the answers to the questions you will be asked on the exam are in this book.

A couple of the other reviewers mention using other sources in addition to this book and I fully agree. I never use a single source for any certification test if I can help it. The Oracle documentation is well written and free to download. If you are new to Oracle and have never read the Concepts manual, you should read it at the very minimum. The information tested on 1Z0-052 is spread among seven or eight different Oracle manuals. The book pulls all of that information together into a single location and makes it easier and faster to absorb. However, you should not overlook the fact that the manuals are available if you have questions or want further details on any given topic.

This book has potential

After reading a few Oracle cert books I really, really, liked the way this book was organized. Structurally, it's written well, with cohesion, conciseness, and terms that don't seem like and endless decoupled liturgy of things to memorize.

However, the proof reading and syntax issues in this book blows. It's got way too many errata issues that I'm finding as I read. And this isn't good for a book that supposed to help you pass a test and for a book that's listed at 59.95.

And it's not terribly easy to find the already existing errata that's been published on McGraw Hill's web site(s) of which there are many.

Things I've found already (excluding the already published errata are)

Chapter 5 in the book indicates that BACKGROUND_DUMP_DEST parameter used to point to trace locations. However, this parameter is now deprecated.

Page 278 Chapter 7 Self Test Answers number 9. Indicates that D and E are the correct answers outing C "because there is no relevant information in V$DATABASE. However, on page 275 D in the question is V$DATABASE. D is one of the "correct" answers on page 278, yet V$DATABASE, as indicated, is incorrect. The problem is that there's a mismatch of the test question answers with the actual answers. According to the original question, the answer should be E for V$DATAFILE and for V$TABLESPACE. The answer needs to be rewritten, or the question does.

Page 278 Chapter 7 Self Test Answers number 10. Discusses the DBA_TABLESPACE view. There is no such view; however, DBA_TABLESPACES exists.

Also, I'm getting the feeling that the test questions were aggregated separately from its content. Which is OK, I rather like the challenge--seems more like a test. However, part of me feels that if you read the book well enough you should be able to answer the book's questions using information provided in the book. Shouldn't the author literally be able to cut and paste his own text in the answer section, perhaps paraphrased with a reference to the chapter text? I'm not seeing that at all.

So do I hate this book? Not at all. It's a good read for sure. However, I'm reading it on one of those book club subscriptions and gleaning what I need. Glad I'm not paying full price for something with so many errors. I'm tired of expensive technical books with all the errors in print. If they fix the errors in this book, it could be a 5 star read and worthy of republishing.

Gentle Introduction to Cassandra

Having worked with many relational and NoSQL databases across multiple web and mobile projects, I was recently in need of a quick introduction to Cassandra. I picked up this and the more advanced Cassandra books from Packt when they were on sale recently.

While a book can quickly get out of date, I've so far found Learning Apache Cassandra is suitable (as of this writing) for getting in and fairly painlessly getting a handle on the basic capabilities and differences between Cassandra and other dbs. I'm particularly interested in learning about table structure, performant schema design, query patterns, and the like. The first few chapters (after the typical getting started/installed stuff), walk through an ongoing example of a twitter-like clone. The author does a decent job of building "features" of the project while tying it back to real world use-cases.

Later chapters discuss basic performance considerations, denormalization, and more complex data representation.

As an introduction and familiarization book, there was enough general detail that it should be useful for a while with respect to versions of Cassandra. It will definitely give you enough to branch out to more advanced books or resources on the web. In general this met my expectations.

For books of this kind to get 5 stars, I like to see how things develop with respect to the book being kept up to date and having "ever green" web resources, so it is too soon to tell on that front.

A good introduction to Apache Cassandra 4.5 Stars

If you have some database development background and wish to get a good solid introduction to Apache Cassandra then you might want to take a look at this book by Mat Brown. Mr. Brown has packed a lot of information on the basics of Cassandra into a 250 page book. The book is very readable, well laid out, has many clear examples and very nice illustrations. I think as a introduction it was a great choice for Mr Brown to use Cassandra's CQL as the programming tool of choice.

What I like to see in the second edition is Authentication and Authorization moved into the beginning of the main book as it is a fact of life. I also would like more read and write consistency example as another reviewer asked. It would be nice if the Table level create options could be covered in an Appendix I think it would be useful for both developers and Admins.

Ok my only warning for potential readers is if you don't have a relational database background it will take you more time to work through the book as Mr Brown uses many comparisons of Casandra features to relational systems.

Thanks to Mat, this book is awesome. I read almost all the books on Cassandra available, and somehow I missed this one. This happens to be my latest reading.
One question I have for Mat on Pp 170 of the book. While the diagram seems to be correct, the explanation between the two diagrams on this page, for me, looks incorrect. I could be mistaken.

In my opinion the explanation should say Alice is on Node3, Bob is on Node1 and Ivan is on Node2

Am I missing something. If any one could clarify I would appreciate it.
