Inspiring

Print quality for this is good as they used thick semi-gloss paper. The book is big and the artworks printed within are satisfying big as well.

Collected within this 224-page paperback are the sketches and drawing tips from 25 artists over the world. I've a lot of such books and this is an welcome addition to my collection because I only know 2 out of the 25 artists included. That by itself makes this a really worthwhile purchase for me.

After a 8-page introduction to location sketching and the tools, it features the galleries of 25 artists.

Each artist has several pieces of their sketches featured together with description and a short drawing tip. The tools and materials they used are also listed.

It's wonderful to see the beautiful sketches from all the different places in the world. Each artist has a lovely style and some of them are really good. This book will serve as a nice source of inspiration.

There are a few publishers for this book, namely CYPI Press, Gingko Press and Basheer Graphic Books. CYPI and Gingko should be distributing for USA and Europe. Basheer is distributing for Asia. The price of the book is going to different depending on where and who you buy it from.

Inspirational! If you like to draw, want to improve your drawing skills or just get inspired to draw nore, thos is a great place to start! Yes, it is focused on urban sketching, but it offers so much more. Great comments from the selected artists about their own works, great range of styles. I wish I had bought it BEFORE I spent a month sketching in Germany!

Delicious Read!

Read it, read it!! Emma van der Vliet just gets better and better at this writing business. She had me hooked within the first few pages and frantically trying to stay awake through the wee hours of the night in order to see what happened next! I'm suffering from withdrawal already and hoping that she'll hurry up and write another book soon. If I were her publisher I'd tie her to her desk and refuse to let her do anything other than write. Juicy, real, rollickingly good read.

Spot on regarding the advertising industry

Anyone who has ever had a career in advertising will relate to the shenanigans in Emma van der Vliet’s Thirty Second World. We follow the lives of two women, both at different parts of their careers.

Alison, or Al, as she prefers to be known, is a control freak who thrives on micromanaging everyone and everything around her. Consequently, and despite her tough demeanour, she is blind to her own needs. She is a woman who wants everything – a career and a family – and in her bid to prove her worth, her relationships with her partner, friends and children suffer.

On the other side of the coin we have Beth, who’s just starting out in the high-pressure world of commercial filmmaking. Though she has much to learn, about the work and the people, she brings a refreshing attitude to the jaded crew she joins. Beth hits the ground running, despite her lack of experience. Even though she finds her colleagues’ behaviour a bit trying at times, she clearly has a passion for her chosen career. Her primary problem, however, lies at home, with her boyfriend Dan, who struggles with the fact that Beth is getting sucked into the industry.

Beth and Dan’s relationship comes under pressure, which is not helped by the arrival of a predatory male colleague at Beth’s work. Readers will be able to see the inevitable confrontation coming from a mile away – and it does become more than a little bit uncomfortable for all parties involved.

On the whole, there isn’t much of an earth-shattering plot here. Rather, we see the lives of two women bound in work and friendship, come to important realisations about themselves and the people around them. This is a story about friendship and love, set against the backdrop of the Cape Town film industry, with all its ridiculous demands on people’s time. The writing is detailed, and Van der Vliet is adept at painting detailed, fascinating characters. A bit of head-hopping in the narrative did annoy me, as well as a somewhat implausible, out-of-the-blue event involving a spinster aunt near the end, but overall I found this to be an entertaining read that felt spot on regarding the advertising industry I’ve come to know and loathe.

A must read!!

When I heard Emma van der Vliet was writing another book, I let out a little yelp. A happy yelp!

Emma's second novel, 'Thirty Second World', like her first, 'Past Imperfect' does not disappoint. The characters are so believable, so relatable that when you're finished the book, you miss them, like you would a good friend.

As a working mom, I found myself laughing out loud often and felt comforted that I'm not the only mom out there who doesn't coo when they see a dad grocery shopping with two cute tots!

The only drawback of the book (for a busy mom) is that I COULD NOT put it down. I skilfully used every spare second I had to read it and if you're a mom, you'll relate to not having many seconds to spare during the day.

Whether you've just started your first job like Beth, have earned your stripes as a working mom like Al or have opted to stay at home with your children like Evie 'Thirty Second World' is a must-read!

Is it really all there?

When this book arrived, I first thought "wow, this is a small book!" I was expecting something bigger with a ton of information in it. Then I started to read the book. It didnt take more then two casual days of reading to go though it but, what good information! The informatin is old. Seems to be from the 50's or 60's when bomb shelter hype was high. However, the information is still relavent and shows you how to build a basic tough as nail bomb shelter. It will be easy to extrapolate to other designes given the information provided. I recommend you to get this book, then share it. There are other books, but they are massively expensie from the ones I've seen. Good luck! And make sure you use stainless steel rebar! The regular stuff will eventually rust if you intend on passing the shelter down. Also, make sure you call your local concrete association. There are multiple grades of concrete. The highest grade I've found, given a 3" slab without rebar, will carry the weight of an M1 Abrams Tank. Thats about 135,200lbs.

The history, usefulness and long lasting nature of these structures make it a worthwhile project

Interesting look at vintage cold war personal shelter designs that continue to be useable as the technology of building an underground concrete room has not changed significantly since the advent of reinforcing bar. I appreciate that just about every page is loaded with diagrams and useable building tips. The value in a small underground structure built to these specifications is the ambient temperatures found below the frost line. This means minimal heating and zero cooling cost. With proper building and attention to drainage as described within the book, this type of structure has the potential to enhance a parcel of land for several generations.
