I love mysteries, and I really liked this one!

I love mysteries, and I really liked this one! Ashley and Dale are tenacious in their search for the truth, not only to find the culprit, but to exonerate Ash's brother for a crime he didn't commit. The characters are well written and believable, and the story moves at a nice quick pace so you don't want to put it down because you need to see what's around the next corner. I was glad to see that an opening was left for a follow-on book which I'll be waiting for. I was provided with a free copy of this book so I could give an honest review and am happy to do so, I would have gladly paid for this one!

Demands the readers attention!

This is an excellent read! It is packed with suspense, intrigue, cover up and corruption. The characters are well developed, believable and draw on the readers emotions. The plot has many twists and turns and the story evolves at just the right pace to keep the reader intrigued. I will most assuredly watch for future books by this author. I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Lost me a little

If you like twists and turns in the plot and even what seems evident ends up being incorrect, you may enjoy this book. Some of the British jargon made it hard to follow at times, Dual story lines seemed to crisscross with no clear distinction and made it a rather long read. I often had to look back to see with which investigation they were dealing. Not a page turner that I couldn't put down, but a whodunit that kept you guessing right to the end and even then there were surprises. Not 100% my cup of tea, but still an okay read. I was provided with a free copy of this book so I could give an honest review.

The fifth volume of writings by the noted British Marxist art critic. Besides being a painter, Berger is recognized for his poetry and fiction, which easily stands out in the items here. The material is quite up-to-date, and few of the essays have appeared in earlier collections; seven of the nine poems were previously unpublished. Essays are grouped thematicallye.g., travel and emigration, dreaming, love and passion. Suicide and death are frequent references. "The White Bird," an unforced lyrical essay on nature and art, is perhaps the finest of the art commentary. It avoids dogmatic and ideological generalizations on class struggle and "the rich and powerful and the poor," included in most items. John Berger is alway relevant

It was a delight to return to John Berger's writings through this collection of essays. A few are previously unpublished and the rest date from 1960 to 1984. Old stuff? No. Some of the essays are timeless, those on art in particular. Some offer haunting pictures of a vanished world, travel pieces in Yugoslavia for example. And some are disturbing and dismaying for their current relevance. "On the Bosphorus" was written in 1979, just after the government of Turkey had declared martial law, again. Berger sets this story of modern Turkey, its people, and its politics, on a ferry across the Bosphorus carrying Anatolian, commuting workers, truck drivers and Kurdish porters. The impact of US intervention on Turkish politics appears in the details of lives situated in history and written on the bodies of Berger's fellow passengers and remembered friends. The essay that follows, "Manhattan," is eery for the juxtaposition, and the two engage the reader in a post-September 11th dialogue.
John Berger is an art critic who taught us another way of seeing 40 years ago, but his strength is in the relation between the visual and the verbal. He writes of the the stories told by works of art and fills his essays with pictures of particular. He is the story teller.

Berger's Best Essays

Sense of Sight is possibly the best place to start with the impressive breadth and depth of Berger's essay writing. For anyone new to Berger, this is clearly the place to start. Even though "Selected Essays" features a longer time frame and over 600 pages of writing, "Sense of Sight" contains many of the works that make "Selected" such a powerful collection.
Berger's subjects in "Sense", as Lloyd Spencer says in his intro, fall into a number categories: "travel and emigration, dreaming, love and passion, death, art as activity and artifact, and the relation between work in language and the physical labour which produces and reproduces the world." Berger's confidence in tackling this array of stories is buoyed by his abilities. Few writers today would even tackle such a variety of areas because few command Berger's ability to weave stories and ideas together in the same cloth with the same commitment to both threads.

- "The Moment of Cubism": a powerful and accessible study of one of the most profound developments in painting
- "Leopardi": an introduction to a man Nietzsche considered the greatest prose writer of the 19th century

Better than tax, this book is good

The first ten chapters are somewhat boring due to it being mostly about guidance on what auditors should know, and how they should behave. There are chapters on Risk management, IT, internal controls, etc. In the last 5 chapters it covers the actual assurance engagement; plan, perform, and communicate. The whole book is necessary though to understand how internal auditing works. I liked the book because I feel like I learned something useful that can be applied in the work environment, like training.

The book met my expectations. The only down side was that I paid more than double to land it this side of the world (Zimbawe). The total cost came to $330 and thats not small change.

About the Author

Dr. Eve Shapiro is a Visiting Research Scholar at the Center for Research on Women and Social Justice at the University of California, Santa Barbara. I adore this book.

I make short films and teach film and video, (as well as computer art), and "The Animation Book" made me weep gentle tears of joy.
Not only is it full of the information that both the beginner and the more advanced animator will use, it is an inspiration. It has stills from some of the best independent animations around, as well as pages Laybourne prompts the reader to draw in and rip out.
After reading the intro and flipping faster and faster through the pages, I felt a very powerful need to animate - right now! I haven't felt this excited about what I do in years, and I can't say I've ever found a book that has thrilled me so.
Just to make certain I wasn't being overly sentimental, I put this book in the hands of several non-animating, and highly cynical individuals. One by one, each succumbed to the charms of the little drawings of equipment and then distractedly searched around for a pencil, so they too could begin the exercises.
This was written in 1979, and Laybourne does quite an admirable job of discussing computer technology of that time. But this book rightly focuses on hands-on, experimental work with garage sale equipment; the wonderful animations an individual can make in his/her kitchen.
I want every student, every friend, to get this book, especially those working with new technology. It's a terrific antidote to the superficiality so often imposed by the ever-changing computer. "The Animation Book" encourages playing with ideas and aesthetics, a delightful reminder of what makes moving images amazing.

technical aspects of traditional hand drawn animation

The Animation Book seems geared for professional animation students or the serious amateur, not the casual viewer of Saturday morning fare. The book explores many techniques such as flip books, cutouts, clay, drawing directly on film, and a host of "experimental" gadgets. However, the emphasis is on cel animation, and, in particular, the equipment required to produce it. I especially enjoyed Laybourne's suggestions for homemade animation stands, and inexpensive choices for cameras, editing equipment, and production planning. The author devotes almost no space to artistic concerns but there are plenty of other books for that. Much of the content of this book has been made obsolete by computer graphics which plays an ever-increasing role in the industry. However, if you would like to take a stab at making your own cartoons the old fashioned way, this book will provide much of the technical information you will need.

Excellent for all levels.

The Animation Book was an extremely informative book that tells you straight-forward what you want to know. It is great for novices, intermediates, or advanced. Some supplies are supplied to help you, and a list of additional resources is included
