About the Author
Ivan Ilyich Sergiev (1829–1908), known to his contemporaries as Fr. John of Kronstadt, was the most revered figure of the Orthodox Church of Russia in the half-century leading up to the Bolshevik revolution of 1917. In 1964, the Russian Orthodox Church outside Russia formally glorified him as a Saint. St. John of Kronstadt is best known through his spiritual journal My Life in Christ, which has been read by millions.

Powerful homilies, even 100 years later

The book, Season of Repentance, begins with homilies for the Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee. This is one of my favorite passages in the Bible, and unfortunately the Roman Catholic Church only reads it in Church once every three years. In the first homily for this Sunday, he discusses how publicans and Pharisees still figuratively exist in today's day and age. He explains how pride and self-praise coupled with humiliation of others is a disease of the soul. In the second homily for this Sunday, he talks about not judging others sins, because we have our own sins. He also mentions that every time we do a good deed that we should forget it, because as the Bible says, "We have done what was our duty to do." These excerpts/summaries are just the tip of the iceberg with this book.

Most of the Sundays during and before Great Lent have several homilies associated with them, except for the Third Sunday which has one homily and the Sixth Sunday which does not have a homily at all. You can choose to read all of them for that particular Sunday or just read one a year and visit the other homilies the following years. There are also homilies associated with Great Monday, Great Wednesday, and Great and Holy Friday. There is also an epilogue or bonus homily for Thomas Sunday. My only wish for this book is that there were homilies for Palm Sunday and Pascha to accompany these great Lenten homilies. That small wish aside, these are great homilies filled with Scripture and practical advice that still applies one hundred years later. If you are looking for something to read this Great Lent, then pick up a copy of Season of Repentance.

Wonderful!

This is a wonderful read for Lent or anytime you want to remind yourself of Christ's great sacrifice for us. The sermons are short (3-4 pages) and organized by the feast days and Sundays of Lent. So you can read this book almost daily throughout Lent. I felt myself very encouraged by St John's words and exhortations. Recommended for all Orthodox Christians!

What a beautiful collection of inspiring sermons that for the first time are produced to reach the English-speaker's ears (and heart)! The sermon on Thomas Sunday, placed at the end of the book, is a caution for everyone inclined to too much celebration on holy days. I plan to make reference to its warnings time and again. The saint has a unique gift to bring us to spiritual compunction and birth within us the desire to approach God and be healed of our spiritual wounds.

Very interesting, highly unusual!

Cured is a remarkable book about quite incredible science....and a pretty good story to boot. Natalia Holt has done some very good research here. One of the things, perhaps the most interesting, that she's found is that the best work, the most creative, most daring, most cutting edge work on HIV (and a host of other diseases, too) is not being done by the big corporations, the big pharma companies.
Just the opposite is at work, the innovative research is being done mostly by small biotech companies, such as Sangamo Biotech, in Richmond, California. They are using something called ZFNs, zinc finger nuclease. As I understand it there were some small villages in Europe where over many years, whenever the Black Plague or similar terrible things struck, killing off millions of people, the people from these small towns were spared, they didn't get sick.
Something in their makeup was protecting them, and over the years scientists studied these people in these villages, looking for what it was that made them different, that protected them. One of the things they found was a small finger-shaped growth on blood cells, one that was high in zinc, and thus the name ZFNs, zinc finger nuclease's. Sangamo has been working on refining this ZFN technique for a couple of decades now, and suddenly they're starting to make it work! Quite exciting stuff really, that could indeed change modern medicine.
Cured should be read more....it's a fine book, clearly written; difficult science explained in a clean, clear easy to understand way. An important book, highly recommended!

Great Book for science students or anyone who is interested

This is actually my first amazon review, this book is so good that I decided to write my first (I am only 1/3 into the book). As a science student, I am able to understand most of what Dr. Holt is talking about. She presented the history and anecdotes in a casual story-telling manner. For layman who has no background knowledge in biology, she added illustrations and tried to use analogy to explain the biological mechanism.

This is a great book for anyone who wants to understand the history and science of HIV/AIDS.

Kudos for Dr. Holt

This book is so well written that I felt compelled to read it in 48 hours.
The book is clear and concise, and perfectly understandable to the layman.
I have been reading on this topic daily and this is the first I heard of the "berlin patient", cured by early intervention.
Nathalia brings each patient to life and shows how hard this disease makes their lives.
Hats off to all the scientists and doctors mentioned.

worst book ever

I've used half of the book now. The layout is not very organized. I found the graphical representations useful.

ok, 2nd semester in work. I'd prefer to downgrade this rating to negative 5 if I could. This book has turned into a major disaster. It is so riddled with errors...the derivations are never right. Everytime something doesn't work out right it's because the book is wrong. flat out.

This book gets my strongest disapproval possible. Buying this book is throwing away your money. Thanks engel. Thanks for all those hours lost trying to figure out what mistake I had make working out the derivations in this book only to find the book was wrong all along.

I'm still a little bitter about the false advertising when I got it...re: spartan software student copy that wasn't included.

poorly organzed, needs re-write

When one peruses Engel's chapter headings, one gets the impression that he/she will get a clear, practical exposition of topics of use to the chem student, or working chemist. When reading through the text, this expectation is invariably dissapointed.

Topics are presented in an ad-hoc, haphazard manner, with no apparent unifying reason. Engel does have reasons for choosing the topics and examples he does, but I only knew what they were because I studied the same material in other sources.

If you want to develop an intuitive sense for this material, and wish to think stategicly and conceptually about how to solve these problems, you wont find much guidance here. The text comes off rather more like a hodgepodge of science trivia.

Engel does present much valuable information, but his great weakness is his inability to distinguish a conceptual framework from the details of his exposition. In chapter two, for example he presents, out of the blue, a detailed discussion of the dependence of heat capacity on temperature, having not yet shown the role that heat capacity would play in solving energy conservation problems. One cannot help being misled, and ultimately wasting much time and effort in trying to apply concepts in a context where their application is innapropriate.

In retrospect, Dr. Engel's text could be made much more effective were it re-written, with more emphasis given to conceptual development. In presenting a text, one must constantly have in mind the questions, what is my goal, and what tools am I developing to enable me to reach it. Engel seems not to have had these questions at the forefront. His text seems rather like a first draft, which could be significantly improved, were he to take a step back, and ask himself, "is this realy understandable?"

One of the best pieces of advice ever given to me came from my high school math teacher, who told us that whenever we solved some long problem, we need to then step back, and ask ourselves, "does my answer make sense?". In writing this text, Dr. Engel is attempting to answer the question "what does a student need to know about physical chemistry?" He needs to follow the advice of my high school math teacher, and now ask himself, "does my answer make sense?"

Superficial and horribly written.

This is a horrible book to read and gain any insightful knowledge from other than superficial, basic knowledge. If I wasn't a Chem E and didn't have a great teacher then I'd be in a world of complete confusion. This book does little more than use magic to derive equations and uses inconsistent conventions. In addition, it seems to spend a lot of time on specific thermodynamic examples then using mass and energy balances: the very staple of thermodynamics.
