Stunning Conclusion to a Series that Exceeds All Hype

Pierce Brown blasted onto the scene with his debut novel RED RISING, a captivating book that shattered all expectations and not only lived up to the hype built around it but exceeded it. Fortunately I didn't get around to reading RED RISING until GOLDEN SON released and so I able to read them back-to-back. Somehow GOLDEN SON was even better than RED RISING, Fans will also know that GOLDEN SON left readers broken and bleeding on one of the greatest cliffhangers in the history of genre fiction. We had to wait one brutal year for MORNING STAR, the conclusion to what has become one of the most important series of my lifetime. I'm an avid reader but I haven't held this much anticipation for a release since the final Harry Potter novel came out.

Despite conquering the dreaded "sophomore slump" with style, the finale was always going to be the most difficult thing to pull off. I had low expectations going into RED RISING and with GOLDEN SON my expectations were high but not astronomical. Going into MORNING STAR my expectations couldn't have been higher. Unsurprisingly Pierce delivers -- and in a way that was equally refreshing and satisfying.

Pierce's imagination is a wonderful, beautiful, bastard of a thing. He started with what could have easily been a typical YA novel premise with society being segregated into a hierarchy of colors with Gold at the top and Red at the bottom. He introduces a rebellion when a Red told to "break the chains" and "live for more." Honestly the reason I was so reticent to begin this series is that it sounded like another cookie cutter YA novel. It's even been hailed as the next HUNGER GAMES. The RED RISING series is so much more than that. There's some HUNGER GAMES in its DNA but you can also find ENDER'S GAME, DUNE, STAR WARS, WARHAMMER 40,000, GAME OF THRONES, and (according to a recent interview with Pierce Brown) even the video game RED FACTION. The space opera universe that Pierce brings to life is so vivid and imaginative. He borrows from history and mythology and acknowledges it in his writing.

As impressive is the world building is, none of it would mean a thing if Pierce didn't populate it with a colorful cast of amazing characters. There are so many powerful personalities at play in MORNING STAR. Pierce gives you villains you love to hate and villains you can almost respect. He gives you heroes that you can root for in triumph and suffer with in defeat. And boyo does he make them suffer. The way GOLDEN SON leaves off left me clutching my chest, unsure how I could go on with life. It's a bit of an exaggeration but for real -- I finished reading it right before class one day and it was extremely difficult to concentrate for the rest of the day. Darrow is as dynamic a character as I've ever known. His character arc isn't linear. He learns and loves, he makes mistakes and takes hits. He is always growing, even if it's not necessarily always in the direction he needs to be growing in. His pride and arrogance are often his greatest weaknesses. As for his greatest strengths? His friends. And the greatest of his friends? Obviously it's fan favorite Sevro au Barca, Goblin King and leader of the Howlers. Seriously, Pierce Brown deserves an award for the creation of Sevro. He's the Han Solo to Darrow's Luke Skywalker...if Han Solo was a brash, crude, vulgar, dangerous, hilarious, loyal, lovable, blood-soaked maniac.

Sevro might steal the show in every scene he's in but that's not to say the cast of MORNING STAR wouldn't be fantastic without him. In addition to the returning favorites (some quite unexpectedly), Pierce introduces some new characters. I'm particularly fond of new characters Holiday and Quicksilver. It's important to remember that as with GAME OF THRONES no one is safe. My wife actually told me she tried not to like a character too much because she was afraid it might seal their fate.

It's a legitimate fear because MORNING STAR is filled with bombastic, explosive, high-speed, kinetic action. From space battles to boarding actions to ambushes and duels, MORNING STAR features the stylistic hyper violence that fans of the series have come to expect. Just when you think that there's no possible way Pierce could raise the stakes and ramp up the action he does. I know that there's a RED RISING movie in development but I'd love to see what the right developer could do with a RED RISING video game. I think the property would lend itself well to that medium.

But the violence isn't all there is to MORNING STAR. The cinematic battles are thrilling but its the ideas and philosophy that Pierce explores that will cement the place of the series as a true sf/f classic. Each book deals with the issues of morality, revenge and justice, leadership, and more. MORNING STAR examines the difference between terrorism and fighting for freedom. The Golds aren't all bad, even the ones in opposition to Darrow's rebellion, and the Reds fighting for their freedom aren't all good. Some of the things that Darrow himself does for the sake of his people and the Rising aren't what could be considered moral. He is forced to make strategic decisions and sometimes that results in the death of innocents. It's all very thought-provoking and prevents MORNING STAR from being simple "popcorn" fiction.

And given the morally ambiguous nature of the story told by the trilogy I was curious/anxious to see how MORNING STAR would end. Much of the series has felt like a proper Greek tragedy and I couldn't help but wonder if Pierce would end it like one. Potential pitfalls dotted the battlefield in ending on too high a note or too low of one. Like the master he is Pierce deftly maneuvers to bring the trilogy to a close on his own terms.

VAGUE SPOILERS AHEAD. BE WARNED. TURN BACK NOW OR SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES.

The ending is nearly perfect. Considerable progress is made but not without a cost. Compromises have to be made in order to reach the endgame and I can see where it might leave an opening for future novels set in the RED RISING universe (perhaps told from different perspectives). In any case I read the final page of MORNING STAR with teary eyes and a smile on my face. It's a satisfying conclusion to what has become my favorite book series in years. I thank Pierce Brown for taking readers on such an incredible journey and I cannot wait to see what Pierce has in store for us in the future. I'll buy whatever he writes, I'll tell you that much.

Decent End to the trilogy

There was more discussion of battle tactics than I enjoy.
Also, and this is difficult to explain with out spoiling but I'll try, there is a series of events that take place that one is led to believe is real, but isn't. This would be fine, but the PoV would know it isn't real, yet still thinks as though it is. PoV must act as though it is real, but in their head, their thoughts, knew better-yet we are given thoughts that do not know the truth. This bothered me. Better to have told that part from a separate PoV, one that did ny know.

Liked it with Major Problems

I had a sense of disappointment once I finished Morning Star. I really liked Red Rising. I still liked Golden Son but not as much. I find that I liked Morning Star even less.

I highlighted the first person narrative, and world building, as complaints on Golden Son. They are still valid for Morning Star. There are two things I would like to add for Morning Star. Darrow is a good main character but I find most of his friends are just not that interesting. There is quite a bit more silliness in this volume that I think an unfortunate choice.

Though my major complaint is the cheating, the author does with his narrative. I will keep this spoiler free. In first person books we are inside the main characters head, and experiencing his thoughts. There is a climatic event in Morning Star that requires solely on the reader not having information. When the resolution came and I realized that the author had basically withheld information to make things exciting I cried foul. This can not and should not happen in first person books. It is this one thing that makes me almost put this in the not like category.

I did still like this book. I had major problems but still am glad I read it. If the author hadn't cheated I would have given four stars. Thanks for reading my review! If you have any questions, sound off in the comments.

I like it...mostly!

While the book is indeed riddled with typos, the content is impressively concise. The authors do a great a job focusing on what's relevant in the context of taking the exam and at the same time offer a healthy dose of pointers for more in-depth study. This makes it easy to adapt your pace going through the book, based on your existing knowledge level.

A good example is Objective 4.2: Implement Azure Storage tables - best "to the point" explanation of a concept I've seen in a long time! Pay special attention to the thought experiments, objective summaries and reviews at the end of each objective. They are packed with extra information not explicitly stated in the objectives themselves. Also, watch for questions styled like "which of the following are NOT true" as they can throw you off.

Beyond preparing for the exam, this book will likely make a good reference later on, while trying to maneuver the vast landscape of the Azure behemoth. The only downside is that Azure changes so rapidly, some of the nomenclature used in the book is already obsolete (e.g. web sites are now called web apps in the portals). Also the existence of 2 management portals makes things more complicated than it should be! But c'est la Microsoft, not the fault of the book.

At the risk of stating the obvious, one final warning - this is not a book to learn the underlying technology, it's a book to help you prepare for the exam. Sure, the reader learns a lot of new things but it's not a starting point to learn Azure. There WILL be code in the exam and there WILL be case questions. I am giving the book 4 stars because it does not show any examples of case-based questions where time-management is very important (which would be helpful for preparing you for the exam).

Helped with exam - keeping as a reference

Used this book while studying for the 70-532 exam. Its NOT a 'exam-dump' but does cover all the core exam principles nicely. Also a good practical Azure Developer overview guide with a great deal of step by steps. Passed my exam first shot with a 710 on 700. This book was definitely a great asset. Keeping the book on the shelf as a good Azure reference asset.

Great product in general, would be 5 stars if there weren't so many silly typos in the book. Keeps you on your toes though. Makes you say hmmm.... I understand this stuff so well now that that word MUST be a typo. Clever design? Maybe.

scary, edgy, dark....and brilliant!!

Dr. Holland Banks is head of the Century Psychiatric Hospital and president of the Schizophrenia Research Foundation and the phrase "Physician Heal Thyself" is foremost at the front of her brain. It's just not Holly's week. She is suffering from terrible nightmares from which she awakens thinking her hand is an evil being. At first, she chalks this up to her inner feelings of being inadequate. The daughter of a high-powered research scientist, she has never measures up to the mad-scientist daddy dearest's hopes for her. She feels she has to continually push be perfect, in her work, in her appearance, and the only place Holly lets down her hair is her home. She could chalk up the odd dreams to the pressure of younger
doctors wanting her position, and that she always fears someone is going to find out she is not as good as she thinks she should be. Except for one thing: someone is stalking her.
She first sees him outside her exercise club, then later as she is coming out of a restaurant from a meeting with her father. The man is handsome in a rugged way, and dressed in a plaid shirt - always a plaid shirt. Her sense of losing her sanity increased as she begins to hear his thoughts. Someone took a shot at her ...she thought it was the stalker, but the police
point out she was watching his hands at the time and he was not holding a gun. Was someone else shooting at her? Where they shooting at him?
The riddle of the stalker's identity comes to light at a press conference where her father is announcing his breakthrough in genes altering. Holly fears her father is pushing into areas that are not only outside of what is legal, but way beyond what is ethical, and has warned him not to announce she has anything to do with his work. Despite two warnings, Leyland Banks does just this because he needs Holly's reputation ...and more. When the stalker breaks into the conferences and attacks Leyland, Holly's grip on reality slips even further, for she hears what the stalker is thinking.
The man is admitted to her hospital as a patient, and Holly is strangely drawn to the reporter who seems to have gone mad. She is rattled by his blethering about people who thought they were aliens...very similar to Holly's own dream. As she begins to work with the reporter, she starts to fear something dark and sinister is spreading it tentacles throughout the city. There are strange deaths, people disappearing, and a sniper on the loose racking up nearly two dozen kills ...and at the bottom it Holly's fears her father's work is the cause of it all.
Squires continually pushes the edge in her writing. Keeping the reading off balance and pulling them along on the dark ride. It's a first class nail bitter that you won't be able to put down.

This author is awesome and so is the story...

Holland Banks, (Holly), has made a sucessful career for herself as a pschiatrist, despite the fact that she often feels like she is going insane herself. Voices clammer in her head, giving her little peace. It is not until she meets another person with a problem much like her own that she has hope of finding peace.
Jeff McQueen first encounters Holly when he attacks her and her father. Later, when he becomes her patient, Holly finds herself attracted to this strange man who is able to bring silence to her voices. When they touch, Holly and Jeff are able to find peace. They also find that they can hear each other's every thought. They are not the only ones though. Hundreds of people in the world have this blessed curse. Those people are the voices in their head. What is more alarming is that Holland's father is working with a corrupt senator to use as many of these people as possible in genetic manipulations and political schemes that could lead to a world wide nightmare.
Imagine, a world where no one could lie, not even the white, polite lies that are termed diplomacy. In a world built upon lies, the truth is the one thing that could destroy reality. Holland and Jeff must stop the senator from his scheme to control the world. The two lovers set off on a journey across the country, barely a step ahead of an enemy who can invade their very thoughts.
***** One of the best things about Susan Squires is that she always creates a new way to tell stories. Her plot is exciting and thought provoking, and her characters realistic. From politics to religion, she covers all bases. There may be many books about psychics, but there is not one that is like NO MORE LIES. *****

not my cup of tea

Let me preface this by saying that Susan Squires has written some books that I've enjoyed - this just isn't one of them. I have no problem with 'shadowy conspiracy' stories, but I think they're difficult to execute well. For me, this one fell short, and it's hard to explain precisely why without including spoilers. I can say that I found the purported motives of some of the bad guys, and especially one person who shouldn't have been a bad guy, unpersuasive. Also, I found the supposedly positive outcome of the perilous situation the H/h had been in to be horrific in its implications. In addition, I found the pacing of the book to be uneven, and therefore my investment in the lead characters was sporadic too. In short, there are better Squires books in which to invest your time and money.

This is by far, the best devotional I have ever read.... I've grown so much this year from these readings which "happen" to be so timely... Jon has a gift for getting down to the nitty gritty to the A of the OIA (observation, interpretation, application) that most often is missing in many commentatries.... This book goes through the new testament in order in a year... He pulls out the gold nuggets and the readings are so awesome and so INSPIRED that I read them twice! Cost/Value is unbelievable for what you're getting. A private tutor to mentor you for a year, or as many times you want to read this book. Listen, this is coming from someone who does not enjoy reading and really has a somewhat negative view of the concept of devotionals just to qualify this review. The only other devotional comprable is A TABLE IN THE WILDERNESS by Watchman Nee... I read that two years in a row. I've read MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST and others, and I'm telling you that there will be no buyers remorse on this one. In fact, I'm giving it away as Christmas presents this year. KJV single-column perfection

I've always had an appreciation for a good bible and not until lately has format been at the top of my list in priority. Since I was little I've had a fascination about the word of God, but knew very little about it or how to read it. After coming from little to no reading of the bible to reading just the King James Bible to expanding that to ESV, NIV and NASB; I've realized one thing in the process - the formatting is key to understanding context clearly. I always felt when I read a KJV that the text seemed so interrupted and choppy. Then I decided to pick up another version (my favorite is the ESV) and see how they read. I was amazed at the way they read and how the text flowed. The paragraph setting made it much easier to comprehend. I was frustrated because every KJV had verse by verse formatting and given the somewhat archaic words in the KJV the text was made that much harder to understand. I love the King James Bible and the rich heritage that comes with it. I know that it doesn't use the most up to date manuscripts and some passages can be a little bit confusing, but the language at which the text is presented has a wonderful ring to it. Not to mention that our former brothers gave their lives so that we could read the bible in English. If you ever get a chance to do a little digging into how the KJV was made please do so. It'll give you a new appreciation for the King James Bible.

As for the New Cambridge Paragraph Bible, I think it is executed very well. Like I said above, the perfect size and formatting is something I've been waiting for. I was ecstatic to receive my ESV clarion a few weeks ago and was planning to get the KJV clarion as well, but saw this rendition by David Norton and that they were coming out with a personal size (perfect for me!). I cannot tell you how great this bible is. I think I may like it as much as my ESV clarion (if you own a clarion you know that's a big statement). I never thought I would like a hardcover this much. You really do feel like you are reading a book and the size feels right in your hands. Exactly the way I want to experience the King James Bible. The size is actually perfect, not too big or too small. I would say the text block is very similar to the clarion, yet, the print experiences slightly less ghosting than the clarion (to be honest - pretty close to the same). If you want to save money and experience the KJV like never before, I would get one of these today! For me I couldn't justify spending another $120 on a bible so I thought I was settling for a KJ version format that was similar to the clarion. I can tell you that this is not settling ... this may end of being one of my go to bibles for daily reading! Seriously, pick one of these bibles up ... you will experience the beauty of the KJV like never before!

Great publication!

Firstly, it came as described, so good on you, shipper.
Secondly, it's a great edition. I love the hardback volume more than the paperback, personally, and the style of its format is great. I love the King James translation, and the way David Norton has formatted this is perfect. The paragraphs help in reading for extended periods (I never liked verse by verse) and the Psalms and Proverbs are formatted as poetry. Beautiful. I just love it.

Love it! Great hardcover KJV

Love it! Great hardcover to stand-up on your book shelf. The pages feel great, not thin, not too thick. It's a great font. I'm in-love with single column settings now, and this one is perfect.

I really like how the footnotes are set to the side of the text, and to the inside (and there are no section headings) so that the body of the text is nicely placed away from the"gutter" or seam/middle of the book. Of course, if this is a Bible you want to take notes in, that's a problem because it would be impossible to write much of anything right there in the gutter. But for me, the KJV is a cross-reference reader for me with an ESV as my main reader and note-taking Bible.

There are no cross-references, and I prefer that. I don't like a bunch of references distracting my reading and taking-up space on the page.

I like a soft cover Bible as my main reader, to hold in my hand, but for an alternate translation Bible that will sit on my shelf, I wanted a hardback. So this Bible checks all the boxes of what I was looking for; KJV, single column, no cross references, hard cover, sewn binding. It's a very nice Bible and I just might get it custom rebound with a nice leather covered hard cover. Lord willing, this will be the KJV I go to on my shelf for the rest of my life.

For the past 15 years authors Dr Tom Pfeiffer and Dr Ingrid Smet have been studying volcanoes and operating tours to active volcanoes worldwide.

Ingrid has recently completed her PhD at Ghent University.

Photographic introduction into the fascinating world of volcanoes!

Putting together this volcano photography book with Tom turned into a journey of discovery for myself!
As I did not yet travel to all destinations we covered, browsing through his pictures to select the most interesting
ones and looking up information on the specific volcanoes and eruptions for the text turned out to be the best way
to get familiar with the large diversity of volcanoes and volcanic phenomena that can be found all over the world.
And when we saw the first proof of this book, we immediately loved the gorgeous job done by our designer Thomas!
So although I am obviously not an objective reviewer, I can honestly recommend our book to anyone who likes marvelling
at captivating photographs of natural phenomena whilst reading a bit about the volcanological and cultural background of the images.
