Great resource of the mythological stories of the stars!

I found this in a local bookstore and it was exactly what I was looking for...a kind of anthology of mythological stories of the constellations in the sky. Although there are illustrated constellations, it's not the kind of star atlas that shows you how to find Messier objects, planets, or other astronomical features with your telescope or binoculars--be aware of what you're getting. For me, this was a great book to use to get familiar with the stories behind the stars and then head out to the backyard with my son for a "campfire-like" storytelling session. The stories (and some poetry) are laid out on a page or two, while the image depicting the constellation (artist illustration) is on the facing page. I absolutely love it!

It fills a need.

This is the only book of its kind that I've read that is so thoroughly researched. It's a pretty comprehensive study of the various ways there are to end one's life. And each method is rated in many categories including effectiveness, ease of obtaining the required materials, painlessness, etc. Near the end of the book there is a good description of how to obtain the best drug (in Mexico) and includes very helpful pictures of the products. I can seriously see cutting the pictures out and showing them to a clerk in Mexico who might otherwise not be able to figure out what I was looking for (because of language difficulties). However, you pay a stiff price to get this information in paperback form ($35.),there is a lot of scientific "padding" to fill out the pages and that is why I gave it four stars instead of five. However, it is the only game in town at this time as far as I know so I'm glad that I have it in my library in spite of the high cost.

straight to the point

I am only in my 30's and not ready to leave this place just yet(if I can help it). Knowing that I have this book is such peace of mind for me and my boyfriend because should anything happen I want to control MY outcome. The book gives you alternatives on how to end it and gives you the information you need to be able to make sure you don't make mistakes. This is much better than trying something and have it go horribly wrong.
I REALLY THINK EUTHANASIA SHOULD BE LEGAL.

Lacks practical solutions

For those who would like to have control of their destiny, this is detailed but frustrating book. The problem is that none of the solutions that could be considered "peaceful" are practical for most people. The primary "peaceful" solution requires going to Mexico to smuggle a life-ending drug into the US. The second best option requires obtaining a prescription for a drug that most doctor's are unwilling to provide. The remaining solutions are anything but peaceful and would cause devastating trauma to any family member who might become involved during or after the end of life event. Hopefully, there are (or will be) other books that better address the issue of death with dignity.

Great Introduction to Systems Engineering

I took a course in school that used this book and I really enjoyed the book and what it taught me about systems engineering. The authors do a great job of walking the student through the systems engineering process, and ginving a general overview of the steps. The later chapters expand upon this overview to give the detail needed to actually carry out the process. The last part of the book expands upon the "-ilities" of systems engineering which are the authors partiucalr areas of interest. I think anyone interested in systems engineering should get this book, its a great resource. A few things I didn't like was the constant referencing of graphs and figures from previous chapters, it really inhibits my learing when I have to keep flipping back and forth to follow a train of thought. There are also a few chunks of the book that are very, very hard to follow the logical train of thought and require meticulious attention to the detail, and often require rereading. I'm hoping the authors with put out an updated and expanded edition soon, that compensates for these shortfalls.

A Good Start

I have been working through this book for about a month, and find that it follows a logical progression through AutoCAD MEP. It does not claim to be a reference book, but I intend to refer to it.

I have found one mistake, but working through it only made me more aware of the features of the program.

I'm looking forward to working through the rest of the book.

This wasn't really what I was looking for. I want a book that has shortcuts, tips and command instructions. I want a reference book, not a tutorial, which this book basically is. It is excellent if that is what you need.

About the Author
Steven Zemelman's newest Heinemann title is From Inquiry to Action, which combines two of his education passions: Choice-based inquiry approaches and civic action. Steve has worked in many capacities to promote the sustainability of innovative schools in Chicago. For eight years he directed the Center for City Schools at National-Louis University, and he is a founding director of the Illinois Writing Project. He has spearheaded the start of a number of innovative small high schools in the city. His experiences and research in these areas led to his Heinemann book 13 Steps to Teacher Empowerment, coauthored with Harry Ross. Steve has been a frequent collaborator with Harvey "Smokey" Daniels. They have coauthored seven books and videos with Heinemann, including Subjects Matter, Second Edition; Best Practice, Fourth Edition, and The Best Practice Video Companion; Content-Area Writing; Rethinking High School and its companion video; and A Community of Writers. These books are filled with practical strategies for making writing, reading, the content areas, and indeed the life of a school itself into a deeper and richer learning experience for kids. Arthur Hyde is the author or coauthor of the Heinemann titles Understanding Middle School Mathematics; Comprehending Math; Best Practice, Fourth Edition; and Mathwise. A professor of mathematics education at National-Louis University , he received its Excellence in Teaching award. While teaching high school mathematics in Philadelphia , he developed a variety of creative methods for teaching math. He also obtained a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from the University of Pennsylvania , where he later was Associate Director of Teacher Preparation. He continues to work frequently in elementary and middle school classrooms and conducts extensive professional development programs on mathematics and problem solving in Chicago and its surrounding school districts.

Best Practices Rocks

I thought the first Best Practices was great in 1993! This fourth edition is superb! I am using it as a text for preservice teachers. It is truthful, thoughtful and full of extremely useful information for teachers to be the very best they can be. Wonderful, real conversations between students and teachers and real research are featured in Best Practices.

Great Resource

I have just begun my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction and so far this book has been a great resource. I feel like all the information in it is useful and it also discusses the common core, the wave of the educational future. It has a chapter devoted to each of the core subjects. The book is applicable for teachers K-12 but in my opinion is more geared for teachers K-8. All in all a great book for anyone wanting to elevate their teaching.

This is common sense in the teaching world! In these days when everyone is telling educators how to improve school but educators, this is a simple no nonsense review of good teaching practices. It is what good teachers have known for years. Now it is time to get the legislative and public support our hard working educators need. Teaching is tough, but this book gives us hope that common sense will eventually prevail!

Bought this book to prepare for certified somm test. Good for theory but does not help w tasting or service part of exam . I did not pass the service part because I don't have restaurant experience. The service exam is a grilling by master somm . Book does not prepare you for that

Author in need of an editor

Incredibly, this text is the standard course work for the Court of Master Sommeliers Certified and Advanced examinations. This book is packed full of typographical errors, terrible maps and dubious assertions. From the state of this material, I can hardly believe that this is the third edition. By comparison to wine references that were written in the past, contemporary wine journalism is advanced, authoritative and relatively unbiased. One need look no further than the excellent texts written by Jancis Robinson or James Goode to find superb examples in this genre. This book would find itself very quickly at my local thrift store, if it were not for my upcoming examination. Its primary usefulness should be considered as an outline to the scope of the testing involved in the certification process.
