Smart, fun, weird, and teachable science fiction

This first collection of short stories by Javier Bonafont contains some real gems, including several takes on the notion that we are being controlled by parasitic beings with their own agendas. As an English teacher who dabbles in science fiction literature, I can say that these stories are teachable, provocative, and accessible even to novice readers. The Final Letter of Dr. Morris Stanley is particularly well-realized and effective in the classroom. Bonafont has a powerful voice, at times Lovecraftian or steampunk, at times lyrically modern, and I look forward to his next collection.

a cool new book of sci fi stories

I really enjoyed Javier Bonafont's debut collection of intriguing science fiction stories. The stories are well-written, crisp in description, humorous, and thoughtful. They delve into our consciousness and emotions, why we do the things we do....Several of the stories are interconnected, which is enjoyable. This is not a book to pick up if you have insomnia, as the stories lead you into strange and somewhat disturbing, though entertaining, fictional worlds. Mr. Bonafont's stories are quite imaginative--kind of a cross between "The Twilight Zone" and "Antiques Roadshow" (though I'm kidding, they do cross dimensions of time and space). He also drew the interesting cover illustration. You'll be glad you purchased this collection. I look forward to reading more of his fiction!

I liked this book for several reasons, one being that Javier is a childhood friend. This book is exactly what I would have seen him writing. In Third grade, everyday after school, we would go to Javier's house and watch "Outer Limits".

I like his writing style, and would read more from him. I am happy with my purchase. I am also happy to support Javier in his writing.

I would recommend this to anyone who likes Science Fiction, and imaginative writing.

Essential addition to the trilogy and the camouflage book

This third book in the collection of the "Uniforms Of The Waffen-SS" deals with with the panzer uniforms (2/5 of the book), the camouflage uniforms (2/5) and the special uniforms (concentration camps, Sipo-SD, female auxiliaries). I think this one is almost as interesting as the first book and the famous "Camouflage Uniforms Of The Waffen-SS" (the "prologue" of the present "trilogy" about the uniforms of the Waffen-SS) : the whole camouflage chapter is an update to the next release :Camouflage Uniforms of the Waffen-Ss : A Photographic Reference. (Schiffer Military/Aviation History)
Since the release of that book, a lot of collectors around the world contacted M. Beaver, to update the topic. Surviving examples, and war photographs are therefore added on that book.
After the camouflage uniforms, three different and usually not studied topics : the "SS-Totenkopfverb�nde" - concentration camp personnel, the Sipo-SD troops (usually known as the "Gestapo" in most of the continental Europe), and the female auxiliaries.
The variety of topics make that book a very important addition to the collection. Highly recommended !

This is the third volume in his series of SS uniforms and is equal to all his work in it's depth and scope of research. These books are the most complete studies I have in my library of SS uniforms. The actual reference of the orders from the "SS Clothing Board" and the many color photos make this a valued addition to anyone's collection.

Extremely detailed photography, a must for collectors!

There is no other book as rich in detail about this uniforms, and, whether you are collector yourself or just interested in the subject matter. On top of that the publishers have made a point of making this a truly beautiful book with high-quality sleeves and covers, and a print quality to match. As such, the book is likely to retain or increase its value over time. It is therefore an even greater shame, that it arrived smashed up due to inadequate packaging from amazon.

Best Tariq Nasheed book

The Art of Mackin' takes a fresh approach to the much abuse genre of pick-up by writing predominantly for a black audience. Until The Art of Mackin' most books on pick-up were published mainly for a white audience. This lack of pick-up books in the black community made pick-up a one dimensional genre. Being one of the first pick-up books targeting a black audience, The Art of Mackin' help break the mold to a more diverse pick-up genre.

Tariq Nasheed fits the modus operandi of mack. I know this might confuse some of you, but a mack is not a pimp or a gigolo. The confusion comes from how the word pimp is used today. MTV has made popular such out of context phrases as `pimp my ride' or `pimp my house' but this definition of the word is far from its origin meaning. Today anyone with $10 in his pocket is a potential pimp despite any verbal skills.

Unfortunately The Art of Mackin' tends to overlay street terms in the same manner by covering too many topics using catchall words like pimp, gigolo and mack. The book jumps from "The Four Types of Sistas" in chapter two to "How to Be a Pimp" in chapter 3 and finally "How to Be a Gigolo" in chapter seven. Here's the problem Tariq Nasheed isn't a pimp to be giving advice on how to be one. In case you haven't seen Tariq Nasheed, a simple Google search will show you just what I mean. Tariq Nasheed had a podcast in which he never claimed to be a pimp outright.

Beside any confusion this might cause the uninitiated reader Tariq Nasheed does provide blue prints for overcoming common obstacles a black dater might face in the field. Overall the book is original and worth purchasing. I highly recommend The Art of Mackin' over Tariq Nasheed's other book The Mack within, which is just a rehash of this one.

It's Alright...

However the book seems more about stereotypes than the real and deeper issues that you might encounter with women. Human beings haven't really changed much in the past few hundred years so the stereotypes will simply be called by different names but the behaviors are mostly the same. Reading this author is an investment, you can't just read this one book and think you've got it down, you will have to get his literary collection, which I can't comment on, but I have the feeling you won't get the full benefit of this knowledge unless you read all his work.

About the Author
Glenda Elizabeth Gilmore is the Peter V. and C. Vann Woodward Professor of History, African American Studies, and American Studies at Yale University. Her research interests include twentieth-century U.S. history; African American history since 1865; U.S. women's and gender history since 1865; history of the American South; and reform movements. Her publications include Norton’s Defying Dixie: The Radical Roots of Civil Rights, 1919-1950, which was one of the American Library Association’s Notable Books and the Washington Post’s Best Books of 2008, and she edited Who Were the Progressives? and co-edited Jumpin’ Jim Crow: Southern Politics from Civil War to Civil Rights. Her first book, Gender and Jim Crow: Women and the Politics of White Supremacy in North Carolina, 1896-1920, won the Frederick Jackson Turner Award, the James A. Rawley Prize, the Julia Cherry Spruill Prize, and the Heyman Prize.

Thomas J. Sugrue is Professor of History and Social and Cultural Analysis at New York University, specializing in twentieth-century American politics, urban history, civil rights, and race. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a member of the Society of American Historians, and past president of both the Urban History Association and the Social Science History Association. He is author of Not Even Past: Barack Obama and the Burden of Race and Sweet Land of Liberty: The Forgotten Struggle for Civil Rights in the North. His first book, The Origins of the Urban Crisis, won the Bancroft Prize in American History, the Philip Taft Prize in Labor History, and the President's Book Award of the Social Science History Association, among other honors. In 2005, Princeton University Press selected The Origins of the Urban Crisis as one of its 100 most influential books of the past hundred years.

A Great Update to Nell Painter's _Standing at Armageddeon_

This compares well with Nell Painter's fantastic _Standing at Armageddeon_, another reader on the social, political and economic history of the US from the 1880s to the 20th century. However, Gilmore and Sugrue's book is a bit of an update, for it strives to cover more time as well as to update our research on the earlier periods. I especially like the way that chapters are organized around people, events, and art. This is very useful. For, though the book doesn't have the illustrations that you would expect in a regular (and very expensive) textbook, these are "tangible" items that students can remember, that teachers can illustrate within class lectures, and which can ultimately turn into key terms on tests. This is what we all need more of--good textbooks that aren't too expensive and which help students to remember all this history

I especially like the focus on the history of the South, and especially on that of African Americans therein. I also like that we don't see stark separations between chapters on African Americans in the South and chapters on African Americans elsewhere (where they are expected to blend in with whites and immigrants). This is what I mean by an "update" to previous books. Overall, the book is terrific. So also is the audiobook (I bought both).

I love mysteries, and I really liked this one!

I love mysteries, and I really liked this one! Ashley and Dale are tenacious in their search for the truth, not only to find the culprit, but to exonerate Ash's brother for a crime he didn't commit. The characters are well written and believable, and the story moves at a nice quick pace so you don't want to put it down because you need to see what's around the next corner. I was glad to see that an opening was left for a follow-on book which I'll be waiting for. I was provided with a free copy of this book so I could give an honest review and am happy to do so, I would have gladly paid for this one!

Demands the readers attention!

This is an excellent read! It is packed with suspense, intrigue, cover up and corruption. The characters are well developed, believable and draw on the readers emotions. The plot has many twists and turns and the story evolves at just the right pace to keep the reader intrigued. I will most assuredly watch for future books by this author. I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Lost me a little

If you like twists and turns in the plot and even what seems evident ends up being incorrect, you may enjoy this book. Some of the British jargon made it hard to follow at times, Dual story lines seemed to crisscross with no clear distinction and made it a rather long read. I often had to look back to see with which investigation they were dealing. Not a page turner that I couldn't put down, but a whodunit that kept you guessing right to the end and even then there were surprises. Not 100% my cup of tea, but still an okay read. I was provided with a free copy of this book so I could give an honest review.

John Berger is alway relevant

It was a delight to return to John Berger's writings through this collection of essays. A few are previously unpublished and the rest date from 1960 to 1984. Old stuff? No. Some of the essays are timeless, those on art in particular. Some offer haunting pictures of a vanished world, travel pieces in Yugoslavia for example. And some are disturbing and dismaying for their current relevance. "On the Bosphorus" was written in 1979, just after the government of Turkey had declared martial law, again. Berger sets this story of modern Turkey, its people, and its politics, on a ferry across the Bosphorus carrying Anatolian, commuting workers, truck drivers and Kurdish porters. The impact of US intervention on Turkish politics appears in the details of lives situated in history and written on the bodies of Berger's fellow passengers and remembered friends. The essay that follows, "Manhattan," is eery for the juxtaposition, and the two engage the reader in a post-September 11th dialogue.
John Berger is an art critic who taught us another way of seeing 40 years ago, but his strength is in the relation between the visual and the verbal. He writes of the the stories told by works of art and fills his essays with pictures of particular. He is the story teller.

Sense of Sight is possibly the best place to start with the impressive breadth and depth of Berger's essay writing. For anyone new to Berger, this is clearly the place to start. Even though "Selected Essays" features a longer time frame and over 600 pages of writing, "Sense of Sight" contains many of the works that make "Selected" such a powerful collection.
Berger's subjects in "Sense", as Lloyd Spencer says in his intro, fall into a number categories: "travel and emigration, dreaming, love and passion, death, art as activity and artifact, and the relation between work in language and the physical labour which produces and reproduces the world." Berger's confidence in tackling this array of stories is buoyed by his abilities. Few writers today would even tackle such a variety of areas because few command Berger's ability to weave stories and ideas together in the same cloth with the same commitment to both threads.

Better than tax, this book is good

The first ten chapters are somewhat boring due to it being mostly about guidance on what auditors should know, and how they should behave. There are chapters on Risk management, IT, internal controls, etc. In the last 5 chapters it covers the actual assurance engagement; plan, perform, and communicate. The whole book is necessary though to understand how internal auditing works. I liked the book because I feel like I learned something useful that can be applied in the work environment, like training.

The book met my expectations. The only down side was that I paid more than double to land it this side of the world (Zimbawe). The total cost came to $330 and thats not small change.
