Great Introduction to Supply Chain Management

As a consultant in this area, I have recommended this book to my clients. This well-structured, easy-to-read book is an excellent introduction to concepts of Supply Chain Management. Its target audience, executives who must learn about supply chain in order to make strategic decisions, could be expanded to include any person who wants or needs to learn about supply chain. I highly recommend it as a first book for any project manager who is new to this are.
The book contains 8 chapters, each with a similar structure: a list of the learning and performance objectives of preceding the actual content, which is presented in a logical and interesting way. The content is accompanied by helpful diagrams and a series of examples or case studies labeled "Executive Insight" or "In the Real World". It also contains lists of helpful "Tips and Techniques".
The author begins with an overview of the general concepts of Supply Chain Management. One of the objectives of this chapter is to be able to "Start an intelligent conversation about supply chain management issues in your company" It is a tall order, and the author succeeds, introducing the neophyte to the basic concepts of Production, Inventory, Location, Transportation and Inventory with clear and concise prose. In a very interesting example, Hugos uses the story of Alexander the Great to illustrate how a good supply chain functions.
The following 4 chapters systematically cover the basics of supply chain: Planning and Sourcing, Making and Delivering, Coordination and Technology and Supply Chain Metrics. Each of these chapters takes up the fundamental concepts involved and explains them in a simple and understandable fashion. For those that are reading this book as an introduction to supply chain, there will be many an "aha"of understanding as you read along. Of particular interest for the IT project manager, Hugos explains at length what the various technologies are that serve the supply chain.
In the final 2 chapters the author assists the reader in analyzing the type of market(s) that their company targets, and how to determine and plan for a supply chain to succesfully serve them. As well, the chapter includes a number of usefel tools and techniques that can be used to plan out a supply chain project. Most project managers should find this section to be very useful. He closes the book with a look to the future, and uses the concept of "Emergent Behavior" to make predictions about supply chains of the future. He explains how supply chains will develop "Self Adjusting Feedback Loops", using automation to keep information constantly flowing around the loop.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about Supply Chain Management. It will be helpful in particular to project managers and IT professionals who want to work in the manufacturing sector. It is well thought out and eminently readable!

A practioner's perspective

I have been managing complex supply chains for the aerospace industry for at least a couple of decades and have installed collaborative supply chain applications at several airlines and OEMs. I find "Essentials of Supply Chain Management" a refreshing, easy, and informative read for the practitioner. Having recently gone through several text books written by academicians I find that even the best of them lacked the touch and the feel of real life supply chain issues. Most hands on managers however need to know the latest technologies and best business practices that might help them solve real life problems. Michael Hugo's book comes close to achieving that goal. The simulation model at [...] works hand in hand with the book. It allows paractioners the opportunity to put to test some of the concepts described in the book. The book and the simulation model can but does not have to be used concurrently to help managers formulate and test assumptions relevant to their own operation. With customer experience at the top of SCM manager's agenda these days, this book shines a light on a road not strictly dedicated to the theory of constraints with a single minded focus on maximizing throughput. well done...

first off, the authors do a fine job presenting to the reader an insightful history of street photography. they especially succeeded in explaining (or at least theorizing) how the various photographers came to create their respective photographic styles by finding sources of influence in modern art, architecture, and of course each other.
although there are other reviewers who believe the authors didn't give enough credit to hcb for shaping street photography into what it is today, it is important to note that even in the chapters which focus on the american photographers hcb is continuously cited as a major influence. just remember that this book is a history of street photography, not a bio of hcb!
i also agree with the reviewer who thought the photo placement within the book was a little inconvenient at times. but that minor problem does in no way detract from the overall value of such an insightful look at the history of street photography. enjoy!

it's the photos...

BYSTANDER embraces the social & cultural history of street photography. It touches upon the works of master photographers, yet leaves out so much about the actual photographs.
Trying to follow Meyerowitz's & Westerbeck's conversation, both obviously deeply emotional about the subject of street photography, simply went over my head in a rush of technical details & passionate positing as to why which photographer did what.
It is, however, the photographs in BYSTANDER that draw you back, again & again. The earliest ones that beg to have been enlarged, so rich in texture & composition; the later ones with their implicit social commentaries.
When we say that a picture is worth a thousand words, we're not kidding! Each & every photograph, even those that I couldn't make head nor tail, tell stories of our predecessors' lives & times, letting social history unravel before our eyes.
BYSTANDER is for everyone who loves to look at the past - the everyday, angular, shadow & light city past, through the window of a camera.

This volume consists of lectures delivered during my tenure of the Chair of Poetry at Oxford and not included in Shakespearean Tragedy. Most of them have been enlarged, and all have been revised. As they were given at intervals, and the majority before the publication of that book, they contained repetitions which I have not found it possible wholly to remove. Readers of a lecture published by the University of Manchester on English Poetry and German Philosophy in the Age of Wordsworth will pardon also the restatement of some ideas expressed in it.

The several lectures are dated, as I have been unable to take account of most of the literature on their subjects published since they were delivered.

They are arranged in the order that seems best to me, but it is of importance only in the case of the four which deal with the poets of Wordsworth's time.

About the Author
Andrew Cecil Bradley was born in 1851 in Cheltenham. He was the son of a clergyman and the younger brother of the philosopher F.H. Bradley. He received his education at Cheltenham College and at Balliol College, Oxford, where he became a fellow in 1874, lecturing in Philosophy and English. In 1882 Bradley became the first Professor of Literature and History at Liverpool, and later on Professor of English Language and Literature at Glasgow from 1890, and Professor of Poetry at Oxford from 1901 until 1906, when he retired from academic life.

I especially enjoyed the essay on Keats where Bradley focuses on the meaning of Beauty in Keats' letters. His appreciation of the remarkable character of Keats and how this is reflected both in the Letters and the Poems is instructive. The essay on Shakespeare the Man I found a bit speculative , yet another attempt to say something about the character of the character who mastered and made so many different characters. It is interesting that Bradley believes that Shakespeare is the poet who best exemplified Keats' prescription for what a poet ideally should be, one whose negative capability means he is within and without all the characters he creates. The essay on Wordsworth focuses on his originality especially in finding in the simplicities of daily life, and in simple characters the deepest expressions of human soul.
But there is much more than I have indicated here . This is a classic set of essays by one of the English literary traditions, most important critics.

A C Bradley at his best

I am a fan of the writings of A C Bradley, in my mind the finest critic of William Shakespeare. As opposed to "Shakesperean Tragedy". his epic, this book contains criticism of authors other than Shakespeare, although his criticism of Anthony and Cleopatra is superb. Any one who enjoys Shakesperean criticism will, I think, find much to enjoy in this book.

About the Author

Malin Br�nnback, D.Sc. is Chaired Professor of International Business and Dean at �bo Akademi University from where she also received her doctoral degree in management science in 1996. She also holds a B.Sc. in pharmacy granted in 1986, also from �bo Akademi University. After completing her doctoral degree she was appointed Associate Professor in Information systems at University of Turku. In 2000 she was recruited to Turku School of Economics and Business Administration as Professor in Marketing and became the founding head of the Innomarket research group. Innomarket’s focus was to support start-up biotechnology companies in their commercialization processes. In 2003 she was appointed Chaired Professor in International Business at �bo Akademi University. She has served as Vice-Rector of the university as well. Currently she is Docent at the Turku School of Economics where she taught prior to returning to �bo and she is Docent at the Swedish School of Economics and Business Administration in Helsinki (Hanken). She has been visiting Professor in Entrepreneurship at Stockholm Business School (Stockholm University) since 2012. She has been on the boards of several biotechnology and IT start-up firms. She has held a variety of teaching and research positions in such fields as Information Systems, International Marketing, Strategic Management and Pharmacy.

She has 200 publications in areas such as entrepreneurship, biotechnology, marketing, and knowledge management. She has co-authored seven books with Alan Carsrud which include: Entrepreneurship (2007), Greenwood Publishing; Understanding the Entrepreneurial Mind: Opening the Black Box (2009), Springer Verlag; Understanding Family Businesses: Undiscovered Approaches, Unique Perspectives, and Neglected Topics (2012), Springer Verlag; and�Handbook of Research Methods and Applications in Entrepreneurship and Small Businesses (2014), Edward Elgar. In addition, she has published three case books with Alan Carsrud on family business with Springer Verlag. She, Alan, and Niklas Kiviluoto recently published Understanding the Myth of High Growth Firms: The Theory of the Greater Fool (2014), Springer Verlag. She is on the review board of the Journal of Small Business Management. Her current research interests are in entrepreneurial intentionality, entrepreneurial cognition and entrepreneurial growth and performance in technology entrepreneurship, as well as social media use as well as the role of culture and language in business.

Malin resides just outside �bo (Turku), Finland in the South-west Finnish archipelago with her husband (Patrik), their three children (Anton, Anna, and Axel), and their two dogs. Alan L. Carsrud, Ph.D., Ec.D. was reared in his family’s Texas and Ohio ranching and farm business.� His father was a clinical psychologist and Alan followed initially in his footsteps. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Social Psychology from the University of New Hampshire, a B.A. in Psychology and Sociology from Texas Christian University. He did post-doctoral work in Applied Industrial Psychology at The University of Texas at Austin. He holds an honorary doctorate in micro-economics from �bo Akademi University in Finland. Today he is Managing Director of Carsrud & Associates, a consulting firm for entrepreneurs and family-owned and managed firms. His consulting clients have included government agencies like NASA and the Republic of Palau, the Los Angeles Unified School District, large firms like IBM and Ernst and Young, as well as numerous family and entrepreneurial firms in the United States, Finland, Australia, Turkey, India, Mexico, Japan, and� Chile. He has been involved in over 200 start-ups in industries such varied as retail, wineries, accounting, food, airlines, biotechnology, internet, computer technologies, and even university based entrepreneurship programs.�

He is current academic position is Visiting Research Professor and Docent at �bo Akademi University in Turku (�bo), Finland. His prior academic positions include holding the inaugural Loretta Rogers Chair in Entrepreneurship at the Ted Rogers School of Management at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada; Clinical Professor of Entrepreneurship, Professor of Industrial & Systems Engineering, Professor of Hospitality Management and Founding Executive Director of the Eugenio Pino & Family Global Entrepreneurship Center at Florida International University. He has been Senior Lecturer and Academic Coordinator of the Price Center at the Anderson School at UCLA and Senior Lecturer in Electrical Engineering at the Samueli School at UCLA. He has also been on the graduate faculties of the Australian Graduate School of Management, Bond University (Australia), Durham University (UK), Anahuac University (Mexico), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), University of Southern California, Pepperdine University, The University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M University, and the State University of New York at Brockport.

He is a Fellow of the Family Firm Institute (FFI) and has served on the board of directors of FFI and the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship. He is Associate Editor of the Journal of Small Business Management, and co-founded Entrepreneurship and Regional Development. He also is on the Review Boards of the Family Business Review and the International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation. He founded the UCLA Venture Development and Global Access Programs, which help create new, technology-based ventures in Australia, Chile, Finland, France, Italy, Mexico and the United States. In addition, he created the Family and Closely-Held Business Program at UCLA. He has published over 230 articles and chapters on entrepreneurship, family business, social psychology, mental retardation, and clinical psychology. He has co-authored with Dr. Br�nnback seven books on entrepreneurship and family business and they have three additional books under contract.

Alan resides outside Austin, Texas in the Texas Hill Country with his husband of 14 years, Danny, and their three cats (no he is not a cat lady yet, as that takes four cats) and a half dozen hummingbirds. He and Danny are an avid collectors of Australian aboriginal art, Cuban surrealist paintings, Mexican cubist works, Chinese and Japanese antiques, various antiquities, as well as African sculptures and masks. This book provides insight from a couple who had an unhealthy marriage dynamic with control issues. It provides strategies and a message of hope that if both partners want to change, then their marriage can be transformed to a healthy, thriving marriage. For me, my controlling husband does not want to change, so I must wait on the Lord and work on my end for now.

Excellent resource

This book takes the issue of control in a relationship from an academic discussion to a personal story with examples everyone can relate to. Dr. Welch shares the journey he and his wife and family have gone through and how they have gotten to the 'other side' of many of the challenges they encountered due to his controlling nature.

Kudos to him for being willing to air the good and the bad - most of us aren't willing to take that risk. But it makes this a book where virtually anyone can find value. I highly recommend it.

Life Changing Book, not just for Wifes, but also for Husbands

As a husband, I struggle with some of the things described in this book. Dr. Welch does an excellent job of being able to articulate the issues that women go through. While the title of the book implies that this book is for women, the principles described are something every husband should read and understand.

Dr. Welch uses both personal stories and factual evidence to make his claims and is able to provide real and applicable solutions to these problems. I highly recommend this book as something that individual couples should read together and they type of book that would be excellent for small groups. Newlyweds to couples sharing their 50th anniversary will gain immense insight into the seemingly overwhelming problems that can consume and destroy a marriage.
