Very provocative read

Mr. Avery clearly spells out the facts and statistics that have been absent in the "organic food" conversation for so long. These are the issues that must be weighed and considered when contemplating alternative agriculture methods. As one can clearly see throughout the ratings on Amazon, negative rating is almost exclusively driven by political bias and emotion; criticisms of the book rely on outright dismisal of Avery's data without providing a single rebuttal, rather resorting to personal attacks and cliche anti-isms common among the hipster organic movement.

Avery provides research and insight into a field of study often overlooked - overlooked out of ignorance or willingness, one can only assume.

Wonderful History of Farming and an Organic Myth Buster

With an easy to read style, this may be the best book for laymen who are interested in agriculture since Jared Diamond's "Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies." The author begins with a short history of agriculture, explaining how we are able to produce nitrogen -- the most important plant nutrient -- from air (a renewable resource), allowing us to feed the 6 billion human inhabitants on earth while leaving rain forests and natural lands intact.

Ironically, the organic food movement, which claims to care dearly for the environment, wants us to stop using nitrogen fertilizer. Since doing so would lower crop yields, the only way to sustain the current human population would be to convert more nature regions into farmland, which should be the worst nightmare of a true environmentalist.

The author's tracking of the semi-religious roots of the organic movement also makes for an entertaining read, with anecdotes about Rudolph Steiner, one of the movement's founding fathers. It's difficult not to chuckle when reading Steiner's advice on how to enhance the cosmic, ethereal "life force" of manure by burying it in a bull's horn. Who knew the hippie movement began in Germany back in the 1920s?

The author also takes on the notion that organic food is somehow more nutritious than non-organic, citing quotes by the British Food Standards Agency and the USDA. For example, Dan Glickman, President Clinton's Secretary of Agriculture, said, "The organic label is a marketing tool. It is not a statement about food safety ... Just because something is labeled as organic does not mean it is superior, safer or more healthy than conventional food. All foods in this country must meet the same high standards of safety regardless of their classification."

But isn't organic food safer? Not really, the author writes. Organic foods may contain less synthetic pesticide residues, but organic farmers are still permitted to use "natural" pesticides, which have been found to be harmful to one's health when subjected to the same tests as non-organic pesticides. On top of that, organic vegetables are more likely to carry pathogens such as E. coli (understandable since they are grown in manure), Salmonella, Campylobacter and fungal toxins.

In short, the author shows us in plain English how organic food is not healthier, safer or better for the environment. If you currently buy organic food, the 20 bucks you will spend on this book (probably about the same amount you spend on pricier organic foods each week) might even save you money.

The Truth about Organic Foods

My wife and I found this book to be highly enlightening. We had been buying organic foods ever since our first child and lamenting the significant increase in our food budget. Now we're a lot more at ease with "the food supply" having finally gotten some concrete answers to some pretty complex questions. In researching these issues before, we mostly found more ominous warnings and "we don't know's" from health websites.

For example, now we know that there isn't any substantive difference in "organic" milk vs. regular milk - not even the best lab can tell the difference because hormone levels are the same and all milk is tested several times for even the tiniest traces of antibiotics. If any one of those tests is positive for antibiotics, the milk has to be thrown away. The government scientists even complained that the problem is that the antibiotic test is too sensitive, with too many "false-positives" causing needless waste of milk! We still prefer a local non-organic brand that is not homogenized and comes in glass bottles, but now we're confident that it's as safe and nutritious as organic milk.

The chapter on the history of organics was REALLY interesting - who knew that the organic movement got started way back in the 1920s? Or that doctors and scientists were debating whether organic food was more nutritious way back in the 1940s? Or that organic groups' own research found no nutritional differences in the 1970s? Who knew that 25% of organic fruits and veggies have synthetic pesticide residues and that they're still sold as "organic" because the standards require no testing? (This surprised my wife and I the most, as before we thought residue testing was mandatory before food could be sold as organic - it's not!)

On the whole, this was the most informative food book either of us had read in years and we highly recommend it. The book won't change anyone's mind completely about organic food -- we still buy several -- but we're a lot more comfortable now when we choose conventional foods and save our extra food dollars to spend on high-quality ingredients for the weekly feast.

About the Author

Jefferson Ingram began his academic career by teaching Constitutional History for the Department of History at the University of Dayton in the Spring of 1978 and entered a� full-time tenure track position in the Criminal Justice Program in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Dayton in the Fall of 1978.� He continued to teach in the Department of History for two more semesters and offered courses in Criminal Procedure, The Law of Evidence, and Criminal Law until the late 1990's for the Criminal Justice Program.� During this time, he team taught a death penalty course, The Death Penalty, with a philosophy professor and offered a philosophy-criminal justice course jointly with a philosophy professor on The Moral Basis for Civil and Criminal Law.� In 1990, he taught a course for the School of Business Administration, Law for the Accounting Profession. In 1994, the Criminal Justice Program became the Criminal Justice Studies Program and the course on evidence was phased out with new duties added in the form of teaching a senior seminar course for all graduating Criminal Justice students.� In the Summer of 2003, Jefferson Ingram joined the Department of Political Science at the University of Dayton as a tenured faculty member, where he continues to teach and support students in the Criminal Justice Studies Program as needed.

This was kind of dry. I don't know, it's a textbook.

About the Author

Marilynn R. Glasser, EdD, CPRP, CPSI, is an adjunct assistant professor at Herbert H. Lehman College in Bronx, New York, and has more than 30 years of experience teaching recreation, parks, and leisure services courses. She received her master’s degree in community and outdoor recreation from Springfield College and her doctorate in recreation services and resource management from New York University. Dr. Glasser is a certified park and recreation professional, playground safety inspector, and early childhood outdoor play inspector. She earned the New York State public school teacher permanent certification.

She is a longtime member of the National Recreation and Park Association, the New York State Recreation and Park Society, and the Westchester Recreation and Park Society; she has earned numerous professional awards and certificates from these organizations. Dr. Glasser worked in municipal recreation and parks administration from 1977 to 2005.

Dr. Glasser is the president of Parks and Pastimes, Inc., a recreation, park, and leisure services consulting firm specializing in dog parks, playground safety and education, and training. She has been a speaker on a variety of professional topics at local, state, and national association conferences and has authored numerous articles for professional publications. Dr. Glasser conducts playground safety supervision training programs for elementary schools, child care providers, and parks and recreation departments. She also conducts high-frequency playground inspection training programs for parks and recreation departments.

In her free time, Dr. Glasser likes to play golf, fish, collect antiques, play guitar, and reminisce about the 1950s. She loves animals (particularly dogs and cats), nature, classic automobiles, art deco, and outdoor events such as flea markets, art shows, and concerts.

Target toward city owned dog parks, not private owned.

Disappointed that the book is how to set up a public, city owned dog park, and not much help for those wanting to open a private park. Many good tips that serve both entities made me pleased with my purchase.

Introductory at best

The book reads as a knowledgeable person sharing what they already happen to know. I could have used some research too.
I'm working on a dog park proposal, and while there is lot's of good info in the book, it lacks good data that could be used to justify a dog park in your town: how many are there in the country? Growth rate? Size range? Usage statistics would be enormously useful.

If you're just starting down to learn what you need to know to get a dog park in your town, this is a good book. If you've already spent months doing your own research, this won't take you much further.

About the Author

Jo Weldon is the headmistress and founder of the award-winning New York School of Burlesque, and many of her graduates have gone on to become burlesque stars themselves. Everything you need to get started

The revival of Burlesque, or the art of strip tease, has spread across the United States as a form of female empowerment, creativity and community. What Jo Weldon or "Jo Boobs" provides in this book is nothing short of extraordinary. To my knowledge nothing else exists out there in book form that gives such detailed instruction on working with pasties, fans, makeup, costume, use of glitter, rhinestones, body makeup, hair, and overall performance style and confidence. Jo is specific. Not only does she delve into the history of burlesque and how she herself transformed herself from a featured stripper in commercial clubs to the definitive Burlesque expert that she has become today. Jo also give tips on working with producers, increasing your likelihood of getting booked and general etiquette towards the audience and other performers. This is far from a fluff vanity piece. It is a practical handbook with real life working knowledge that any aspiring burlesque performer could use today to help them become the best performer they are capable of becoming.

The book is easy to read, contains detailed photographs of step by step instruction on working with fans, how to build pasties, and of course twirling tassels. Jo also includes hundreds of photographs of fellow burlesque artists from around the country. So even though some of the information is technical the book is far from boring.

And as a burlesque producer myself, I wish any newcomer would memorize chapter 10 which includes information for newcomers on the best ways of getting booked again and again. It is not just about being the best dancer, but showing respect towards others and earning trust so that people will want to hire you again and again. I wish this particular set of skills was taught everywhere!!

Burlesque artists all over the country who aren't lucky enough to get to take a class from Jo at the New York School of Burlesque can use this handbook to add that extra layer of professionalism and magic to their acts. And even fans of the art form will also enjoy reading about what makes Burlesque or Burley-Q so special.

An entertaining book for those curious in burlesque, newbies and experienced performers!

One part memoir, another part history lessons and a whole lot of how-to, this book is quite applicable to whatever one might be looking for in a burlesque book. It works for the curious, the newbies and those already performing. I wish I would have had this book when I first started getting into the world of Burlesque for I learned and read a lot about backstage etiquette and creating routines that I had to learn the hard way or have been struggling with.

Another great thing about the book is the way Jo makes you feel like you know all these performers as well. She frequently discusses their acts, their advice and uses her own personal pictures, making it seem like you are looking through someone's (fun and scandalous) scrap-book.

The only parts of the book that weren't enthralling for me were her step by step instructions on the NYSoB routine and fan dance techniques, but that is only because I took the 4-week essentials burlesque class where I was taught these techniques and moves in person, so reading them, although a good reminder, just couldn't live up to the real experience. Really though, I think that says something about the Burlesque Handbook, the only negative was that I was given some of the information from the author, herself, in person!
