This book has a large number of figures taken directly from technical publications; however, there is only one author, making the presentation more coherent than most edited books, and the book is quite well done, including copious figures, equations, and references. Chapters (paraphrased):

Over-sized Picture Book Of Men In Skirts!

Andrew Bolton's BRAVEHEARTS: MEN IN SKIRTS is an over sized fashion book filled with color and black & white pictures of men in everything from skirts to sarongs.

It provides some detail about the history of men wearing skirts from different cultures and throughout time. It covers all forms of skirts from kilts to sarongs to kimonos to straight skirts and robes. And it shows many designers who have been pushing the envelope like Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood, Cavalli, Thierry Mugler etc.

No only are some of the pictures from the past, like the 60s and 70s, but many are from the 90s and 2000s, so they are pretty current.

The looks are very cool and surprisingly some are very masculine. Not easy to pull off when the skirt qualifies as a "mini" if it were on a woman. I recommend the book to all those interested in fashion and for those who go against the grain.

The men in skirts theme is one long overdue. I hope Bolton did all right in $$ with this one as that would encourage other writers to address this same theme. Any folks that read this and wonder about the subject could visit [...] cafe.org to join skirt wearing men or read their posts from around the world. As the women have taken over nearly every clothing item traditionally male as their own, why don't men do the same? At least with skirts/dresses? Both skirts and dresses are far better suited for male plumbing much better than they are for female plumbing of lack of it. Pants work perfectly on a female so I'm not surprised that they have taken them over. A sharp cloth edge in a mans genitalia hurts, but no such problem exists for a woman. After all, few men today ride horses and therefore don't need to wear bifurcated clothing at all unless they are on a Motorcycle.

i've just received my copy of bravehearts/men in skirts - believing myself to be one of the first to do so - prior to it's appearance on bookshelves.
the format - although interesting is an awkward one that does not quite fit most bookshelves.
the contents and photographs are well presented although i would have liked to have seen many more - specifically showing the male skirt as it's worn by many ethnic cultures the world over.
the first set of ommissions were those of many east europeasn countries that wear skirts in various forms - from the greek, turk and syrian honour guards along with the dresses worn by the swirling dervishes - followers of sufiism.
west africa alone has many differing designs - based on religion, culture and status with just as many differeng names. throughout the rest of africa many more different versions - mostly traditionally african - depending upon ethnicity can be found. we cannot discount the fearsome zulu impi (warriors) in their antelope or monkey hide skirts. again,more colourful ones depected royalty. many of these are intrinsic to their (african's) existence - long before the days of colonialism and finer cloth options. it was largely due to the arab merchamts that various forms of islamic dress made it's mark upon mombassa, dar-es-salaam zanzibar and northern mo�ambique.
even within india do we find many differing styles - many designs and colours based upon status. the sarongs of nepal, tibet, thailand, burma/mayanar, indonsesia and malaysia too have their own characteristics.
what about the indigenous peoples from the world over, viz. polynesian islanders; the maori, fiji, samoa, borneo and hawaii to name but a few? it is not enough to merely mention them but share their views on westerners co-opting their national dress and treating it as mere fashion fads.
the origin of the kilt too is misleading, as it is believed to have been brought down by the vikings who had their own name for it. contrary to popular belief, it was the english who first took it on - later to be heralded by the scots as their national form of dress. today many of them consider all other kilt wearers throughout the british isles as possuers ...
herein lies another omission, that being the kilt is held in equal reverence in both wales and ireland - not only by english royalty such as king george and the prince of wales as so many erroniously assume.
yes indeed, i would like to se an updated - expanded version od this fine publication in two to five years from now.

About the Author
Dougal Dixon studied geology and paleontology at the University of St. Andrews, where he continued as a research student to revise the standard work on the palaeogeography of the British Isles. In recent years he has worked in publishing and has contributed numerous articles about earth science and evolution to encyclopedias and popular science books.

Model making and the creation of animated films occupy much of his spare time.

The idea of writing about evolution looking forwards rather than backwards was not a sudden inspiration but has been evolving in the author's mind ever since his college days.

Creative, educational, and just plain fun!

"After Man" is one of the most engaging, creative books I have ever had the pleasure of reading. While one might think from its outlandish illustrations that it is a book for children, this is simply not the case. That's not to say a ten or eleven year old wouldn't enjoy this book, but there's plenty an adult can take away from it as well.
Beginning with a basic review of the principles of biology and evolution, Dixon proceeds to apply them across a range of environments on an Earth 50 million years removed from mankind. The result is a menagerie of remarkable creatures. Remarkable in that they are frequently unique, even bizarre, but even more remarkable because they represent the result of a familiar creature's evolution. Dixon's world isn't a fantasyland, every creature in it holds true to the principles he so effectively explains in the first chapter. Moreover, they all fill an important ecological niche; he hasn't created 150 pages of carnivores. Rather, he presents a balanced, albeit limited, ecosystem that sheds light on the state of our own environment today.
Beautifully illustrated and highly engaging, "After Man" is a must read for anyone interested in evolution and anthropology. Furthermore, this book is educational without being heavy handed. One by no means needs to be an expert to learn from and enjoy this very unique work.

An Educational Fantasy

Like many children, I was fascinated with prehistoric animals and animals of fantasy and science fiction. With the fantastic animals featured on the cover it easily caught my eye on a visit to a local bookstore in the '80s. Many years later I would replace my missing copy with one ordered from Amazon. Note that my review is of the hardcover book originally published in 1981. Any changes that might have taken place in subsequent publications are unknown to me.

The book opens with a nice primer on the history of life on Earth through mankind. This factual section is printed on a yellow, heavy paper and consists of about twelve pages of content. Although the page count doesn't seem like much, these pages are packed with information discussing concepts such as evolution, cell genetics, and animal behavior. While the content of this section is not in full color, there is an abundance of illustrations.

The main section of the book, Life After Man, is beautifully illustrated throughout in full color life-like paintings. We are presented a world 50 million years after man brought about his own extinction. The continents have continued to drift and we see a geography different yet familiar. This section is mainly broken down by regions and climate. While each page contains wonderful illustrations, the primary layout of the book is such that one page is heavily illustrated and the facing page contains information about the animals and habitats depicted.

The book concludes as it began with yellow, heavy paper. A couple pages are devoted to discussing the future of life and a nice appendix with glossary and a tree of life are present. Finally, an index.

While the primary content could certainly be considered fantasy, the concepts and how they are applied are as scientific as any. Unlike other books presenting fantastic views of the future, the author has kept his vision grounded to the science as he sees it. Animal loving kids as well as adults should love this book. In retrospect I find it even more interesting. In a time when nuclear war seemed a real possibility and global cooling was seen as the most likely environmental concern, we were given a view of a thriving planet millions of years after our departure.

Technical, but a great kid's book just for the pictures.

One of my parents friends owned this book, and even when I was too young to read I remember begging to borrow this every time we went to their house. I don't think I ever got around to reading the text inside back then, but this was one of my favorite books when I was little, it was like some mysterious tome of magical lore and creatures.

The illustrations are just as beautiful and fascinating as I remember. Highly recommended for kids, and for adults with an interest in zoology, biology and evolution.

Shiloh Sophia lives life as a great adventure narrated by the creative fire of her Muse! She has been painting, writing poetry, publishing books and teaching at universities, the United Nations and in her own programs globally for over twenty years.

Her soul work is inspired by the idea that self expression, the freedom to express what each person thinks and feels in the world, is a basic human right. Her research and development around this idea has focused onserving women and girls through giving them access to methods of transformational art-making through stories, symbols and inquiry.

Shiloh is the Curator and founder of the Intentional Creativity Foundation and Cosmic Cowgirls, a woman and girl owned school that serves between 500 and 5000 women a month through revolutionary education, bothon-line and on-location. She has also founded a teacher training program, Colorof Woman, which certifies women to teach Intentional Creativity worldwide.Currently there are close to 200 teachers in the lineage. She has brought the technology of Intentional Creativity toacademic settings by teaching at universities in Global PhD and Masters programs.

Intentiona lCreativity, an intuitive painting process accessing internal imagery and story,has ancient origins. Shiloh'sl ineage of intentional creativity comes to us from New Deal artist Lenore Thomas Straus, who trained Shiloh's mentor, artist Sue Hoya Sellars. Sue and Shiloh's mother, poet Caron McCloud, worked together with Shiloh to bring the method tothe world.

Shiloh lives in the vineyard lined hills with her husband, Jonathan, whois also a poet and artist. Their Muses can be found most mornings having teaand discussing quantum physics, philosophy and sacred texts in the Red Thread Cafe.��

A Gift for Your Creative Soul

What a gift for our creative souls and wild, longing hearts this book is! So many sparks of inspiration, deep inquiries, spiraling worlds of possibility. I find myself randomly opening a page as a sacred gateway into poetic possibilities for my soul and start writing, doodling, visioning inspired by each page. The writing is bold and loving, fun and profound, beautiful and deeply real. I have already dog-eared so many pages to return to again and again.

I was lucky enough to pick up a new copy of this book in a model TRAIN store for $17.95...not realising how rare it is. I have read it cover to cover and have posted all my other miniature books on Ebay. This is the ONLY one you need. I agree with the other poster...it should be rereleased.

I remember when this book was on the shelf in the local hobby shops.Now out of print it is a much sought after publication and for good reason. It was a good resource then and still is. If you are looking at starting to build or paint figures, Shep Paine is a world renowned master modeler who takes the novice through a step by step process with plenty of good images and text to back them up.In a world where more and more great subjects are available to the aspiring figure modeler, this kind of resource is invaluable to have beside you on the work bench.
