Great Adventure Story

This is an incredible story; particularly interesting for anyone who has sailed salt water in a boat under 30 feet. "Berserk" is the first true sailing adventure I've read where the trip was not well (if not over) planned and the reader is not assailed with tedious sailing jargon and snobbery. Like Ted Turner, Mercy calls a rope a rope. Perhaps David Mercy's lack of sailing experience at the time was a saving grace... the guy may have thought it was always that rough! I highly recommend the book and I look forward to more from Captain Jarle & the author, as I've done a bit of Googling and see that they have been at it again... this time up North.

I have to admit that I couldn't put it down once I started.

My only reason for not giving it 5 stars is that the book lacked photos despite the fact that the author spoke frequently about filming and photographing the journey. I believe that a TV series was produced with some of the footage.

If you look further into the characters and where they ended up it leads to a darker side of their sea bandit lifestyles. Maybe their lack of respect for the sea extended to some oversights down the track. Easy for me to say sitting at home...

What man is capable of?

book is about an amazing story about 2 first time sailors and their 20 year old captain, sailing to Antarctic. Their boat was not prepared or supplied for such a trip, which did anger me that they didn't think out the trip and might have risked others in a potential rescue. I'm still having a hard time believing they survived hypothermia. The last word in the book brought a smile to my face and warmed my heart.

Over a thousand years ago, the Persian physician and chemist Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Zakariya al-Razi presented his students with a book of alchemy instructions called the Kitab al-Asrar or Book of Secrets. For over seven hundred years this systematic text on managing chemicals, equipment, and procedures was copied and imitated throughout Europe. Using historian Julius Ruska’s authoritative German translation, this book presents al-Razi’s Book of Secrets in English for the first time and analyzes it from the perspective of a modern scientific laboratory. The Kitab al-Asrar offers a view into the understanding of chemistry and procedure organization in the tenth-century Islamic world. Yet a careful reading yields even more than that. As a laboratory manual, it gives intriguing clues into Persian culture under the Abbasid caliphate: the relationship of teacher and student; attitudes toward safety, labor, and quantification; tools and logical problem-solving; commerce and the availability of luxury goods; and the value of the written word. About the Author
Gail Marlow Taylor began her graduate studies in history following a 25-year career in laboratory medicine. She completed her master’s degree in 2008 with a thesis entitled: “Al-Razi's Book of Secrets: The Practical Laboratory in the Medieval Islamic World.” This analysis, which included her English translation of the Book of Secrets, won the 2009 Outstanding Thesis Award at California State University, Fullerton. In June, 2014, she was awarded a doctorate in history at University of California, Irvine. Her dissertation analyzed the reception of New World medicinal plants in sixteenth-century Germany, and included a year of research in Wolfenbuettel on a Fulbright Scholarship. She lives with her husband Charles in Coto de Caza, California, where she enjoys spending time with her children and grandchildren and writing her blog, “History’s Edge.”

Interesting Reading

I have always been interested in both history and science. This book combines both. It is well written and will be entertaining and a good read for all people who share those interests or just like to learn about interesting times and where things we take for granted come from.
