Good read. Strong on examples. Understandable. Digestable. No real soup to nuts projects inside is it's weak point.

The author's put out a lot of these books. He's a good read and offers a ton of helpful advice. My issue is that the book (like all VBA books it seems) is for beginners in VBA. If you have never programmed in your life or have very little experience at all, this is an excellent primer. If, on the other hand, you've been using Excel for a decade or more as I have and are looking to "deepen" your knowledge, this book is a hunt and peck affair. But again, the downloads help a lot to resolve this. Page 303 on pivot tables has an error in the code (i should be 2 to 14 and not 1 to 14 in the loop), but otherwise the examples and the downloads seem to match up just fine. One issue I have with all "not Sybex" and "not Murach" publishers is that the books give a ton of disconnected examples where as those two publishers run the reader through several projects from start to finish so the reader receives a keyboarding experience that is connected and is a better learning tool. This is a publisher issue more than an author issue, and it depends on what the reader expects too I suppose. The book is well worth the price for the beginner to intermediate, and as an intermediate/advanced reader re-learning a language I abandoned a decade ago, it's a good refresher. However again, the index isn't that useful, so I find Mr. Google doing most of the lookups. (I know what I want to do, I just don't remember the exact syntax) Lastly, if you don't understand OOP principles, I would suggest another book focusing on programming structure to help you with OOP in addition to this one. The examples are filled with OOP framework, but since no project is there per se, the reader might not realize this if they don't already have that knowledge—and OOP is a powerful structure to work from. BASIC didn't start out with OOP when I first learned it. And OOP is key to code efficiency and speed. Best of luck to all and my thanks to the authors.

Useless without the Companion Files

Good book but poor paper quality and packaging

This should be a good book, I hope so, considering so many reviews I read.
However, the paper quality of the book I received is not good for the amount I paid. Also the packaging did not give me a feeling that the book is brand new. A bit disappointed with the printing and packaging I received.

Primer of statistics - not specific to biostatistics

This book showed up in my med school library today and I read most of it in about an hour. Not that I'm anything special in terms of reading speed, it's just not as dense as most stat books. That's a good thing, mostly - the author has an engaging writing style that's approachable. He goes over a large number of statistical tests, applying them to problems such as predicting martian weights for a given height. Yep, Martians. What is the standard deviation? When would you use a t-test? Why p < .05? If those are new concepts to you then I think you'd find it useful. He makes the point in his intro that many people just accept journal article results. Maybe that's his tie-in to biostats - if you are reading biostats articles then you need to know stats?

To me, if you're looking to learn about biostatistics, I say keep looking. While the author does use examples that relate to living things, such as the effect cell phone radiation on rabbit sperm, it's got very little to do with the business of biostatistics. He's got so many elements in there to let you calculate stats by hand (or to use programs that appear on the accompanying CD-ROM) that it fluffs up the book unnecessarily. Personally I'd just get a Schaum's outline which will give you the opportunity to practice the concepts and then an actual biostats book to learn more about the field. Or maybe get this book along with a schaum's guide so you'll at least be able to work with the concepts. Here's one I picked up - it's cheap. Schaum's Outline of Probability and Statistics, 3rd Ed. (Schaum's Outline Series)

So, high marks for readability, as an introductory stats book, but when you try to think about reality - when the relationships between what you are trying to predict and all of the things you hope predict that thing aren't perfect it shows that it's only 250 useful pages and in the end it's just what it says, a primer but of statistics, not biostatistics.

So confusing

I minored in mathematics in undergrad and aced biostatistics there. This book has SO many mistake (class makes a game out of finding them) and I don't mean the grammatical ones. Where did this guy learn to write? Run-on sentences galore are compounded upon his misuse of terminology (i.e calling a group a "population" and failing to mention he changes his definition by chapter 3 on what that is)

My desire in this unpretentious manuscript is to present a "principia" handbook for Christian students and teachers in the light of their generation's music. Five chapters are dedicated to biblical principles in the context of our contemporary. Biblical principles must be seen before we will see what is happening both in the world and, more specifically, in the conservative churches across our land. If these early chapters are not read, the following chapters will reap no true appreciation and understanding, for out of "principle" comes "conviction;" otherwise conviction is simply a bias or prejudicial belief. The remaining chapters will focus on the subject of music itself. Three chapters deal with the history and philosophy of secular rock, a more pointed analogy of the world-wide powerful influence of the Beatles, and the rise of deva music in rock culture. Another chapter presents the history of music through church history, followed by a chapter presenting the birth and growth of "Gospel Music," and the final chapter deals with the history and present trends in Fundamentalist music. A "Postlude" concludes my thoughts in the light of a present need and future hope. . . .

The title of the book, Confronting Contemporary Christian Music, may seem somewhat forthright. But we are living in a time when this music has the manner of Goliath, the uncircumcised Philistine, coming before the Camp of God. As young David of old, the giant CCM must be confronted with the stones from the brook of God's Word. It is not only a philosophical battle; it is a spiritual one. May God dispel the fear and timidity among His people, so that they may rise up and confront this carnal, uncircumcised music invading our churches, for it is bold in its sounds and unseparated in its message.

In telling this story, Teiwes focuses on key participants in the process throughout both "rational" and "utopian" phases - Mao, other top leaders, central economic bureaucracies and local party leaders. The analysis rejects both of the existing influential explanations in the field, the long dominant power politics approach focusing on alleged clashes within the top leadership, and David Bachman's recent institutional interpretation of the origins of the Great Leap. Instead, this study presents a detailed picture of an exceptionally Mao-dominated process, where no other actor challenged his position, where the boldest step any actor took was to try and influence his preferences, and where the system in effect became paralyzed while Mao kept changing signals as disaster unfolded.

A Good Summation of the Horror of The Great Leap Forward

The insanity of Mao Tse-Tung and the rest of his political leadership is laid bare by this book. In it, we read of a fanatical despot, jealous and fearful of the west, suspicious of his erstwhile ally, the Soviet Union, who was determined, whatever the cost, to increase his country's power and influence and to do so in the shortest possible time. He even had a name for his ambitious new program. He would call it 'The Great Leap Forward' and it would accomplish in only a few short years what the capitalist west took decades, even centuries to accomplish previously.

Intoxicated, as Mao was, by abstract ideology and completely out of touch with conditions and possibilities as they existed in the China in the late 1950's, he proceeded to coerce party and government faithful to accept his vision of a China that would very soon be able to compete economically and even militarily with the likes of Britain, the Soviet Union and, eventually, the United States. Never squeamish about sacrificing human life in pursuit of his own power and glory, Mao explained that all they need do was further regiment both peasantry and proletariat, dictate to them a set of arbitrary economic goals that, for the most part, had no relation whatsoever to reality and then use the whip, the stick and the shot in the back of the neck to ensure their fulfillment. Not to be outdone, his assorted leadership cadres, whether out of sheer fanaticism or, perhaps more likely, pure, naked fear, took Mao's insatiable demands and began to ratchet them even higher as they attempted to outdo each other in their zeal to please their master.

As a major part of the plan, grain quotas were revised upwards to completely unrealistic heights despite the fact that no practical means existed to fulfill them. This, in turn, prompted Mao to demand ever more grain to sell abroad in return for much needed hard currency. Of course, such a mad policy, the very same pursued by Stalin some twenty-five years earlier, soon resulted in widespread food shortages as production simply failed to keep up with export demand. This, coupled with another insane idea of Mao's - that peasants would also be recruited to increase steel production by utilizing makeshift, 'backyard' furnaces to melt whatever steel happened to be at hand - pots, pans, farm implements, tools - served only to further inhibit the countryside from producing sufficient food.

After several convulsive years, as the number of deaths through starvation, disease, torture and outright extermination soared into the millions, it soon became obvious that Mao's 'Great Leap' had managed perhaps one significant accomplishment. It had reduced China to shambles. The countryside was in famine, dead and dying littered villages and towns and the vast majority of the steel produced by these 'backyard furnaces' was virtually useless and left peasants critically short of farm implements and tools. Even the Chairman himself began to realize the extent of the disaster he was largely responsible for creating. As yet unmoved by the human cost - conservatively estimated at ten to twenty million lives - his real fear was for his own position, so evident was the sheer ineptitude of his leadership. He called a halt to what was supposed to be his nation's greatest achievement but only after terrible cost to the Chinese people and their economy.

As a result and just as he had feared, Mao did suffer some diminution of his power and prestige but, being the ruthless and callous psychopath that he was, he remained determined to restore his position regardless of cost, which he did by again throwing his country into yet another mad adventure, the so called 'Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution'. Initiated in 1965 and in a country still reeling from the disaster of the 'Great Leap Forward', it plunged China into almost complete anarchy and did not really abate until the Chairman's own death, by natural causes, in 1976.

As Chinese society continued to liberalize in the 1990's and beyond, more and more of the actual historical record of this murderous era continued to come to light. If anything, these new revelations show this book to have, if anything, underestimated the bloody impact of Mao Tse-Tung and his demented policies.

Revisionism in the Best Sense of the Word

The other review (above) makes no sense. Either you deify Mao, or you hold him solely responsible for the Great Leap Forward disaster. Moreover, it represents a poor understanding of the book it is reviewing, as Teiwes and Sun do not make either claim. Rather, this book fits into their revisionist (in the best sense of the term) framework in arguing that Mao did not achieve greater power in the 1960s, but rather held at least the same degree of authority (and arguably even more) but decided that democratic centralism was the best way to discuss and implement policy while maintaining Mao's own power. This, as many know, ended in 1959, at the Lushan Meeting. Teiwes and Sun argue that things went the way they did because that is how Mao wanted them to be (of course, in doing so, Mao unleashed, and animated, forces that were ultimately beyond even his control, and which made a stupid policy a devastating one). You might say that this is the same as saying that "it is all Mao's fault." But such a statement makes for a bumper sticker, and does not reflect a carefully grounded reading of this scholarly work. And, granted, Teiwes and Sun make a nonfalsifiable argument, so we have to evaluate Teiwes and Sun on their research, which is extraordinarily meticulous, thoughtfully interpreted, and stimulating (even when wrong). There are other attempts to try to make sense of the GLF (Domenach, Yang, Bachman). This is as good as the best of them (i.e., MacFarquhar).

Deification of Mao

This book represents a credible attempt to add new perspectives (in many cases revolutionary ones) to a significant era in the Chinese political, military, and social landscape.
In my opinion, it fundamentally flawed in that the foundation of the entire work is the fervently-held premise that Mao was omnipotent during this relevant period. In attributing God-like qualities to this one mortal politician/demagogue, Dr. Teiwes and Dr. Sun create the universe of possible conclusions in advance of the critical analyses. Therefore, a tragedy of incredible magnitude (starvation of +35 million Chinese) is attributed not to a convergence of critical events (including environmental, political, and social) but instead to the actions or inactions of one man. Dr. Teiwes is known as a strong proponent of Mao-centrist philosophy so it is understandable that he holds Mao in this true sense of filial piety. Mao truly would be proud.
I think that this book has some value to the scholar of Chinese history and the legions of Mao proponents worldwide.

About the Author
Russell Kolts, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist and professor of psychology at Eastern Washington University, where he has taught for the past seventeen years and has received numerous honors, including twice being named the Associated Student Body's Faculty of the Year.� Kolts has authored or coauthored numerous books and scholarly articles, including The Compassionate-Mind Guide to Managing Your Anger and An Open-Hearted Life: Transformative Lessons for Compassionate Living from a Clinical Psychologist and a Buddhist Nun (with Thubten Chodron), and has pioneered the application of compassion-focused therapy (CFT) to the treatment of problematic anger. He is founding director of the Inland Northwest Compassionate Mind Center and regularly conducts trainings and workshops on CFT and compassion. Kolts has recently appeared in his own TEDx Talk, titled "Anger, Compassion, and What it Means to be Strong."

The best introduction to CFT so far

This book is probably the most accessible and practical introduction available to Compassion-Focused Therapy. As Paul Gilbert (founder of CFT) says in the foreword of this book, CFT is actually not a “simple” therapy as its theoretical underpinnings integrate a rich variety of ideas and research (including evolutionary psychology, CBT, Jungian psychology, attachment theory and Mahayana Buddhism) and the clinical practice of CFT asks from the therapist a broad set of skills, from empathic micro-skills to guiding visualizations. The prowess of this didactic and entertaining book is that it organizes this potentially daunting CFT theoretical framework and therapeutic skills into what Kolts presents as a set of layered processes and practices. These four layers include: the therapeutic relationship as the context where compassion can be experienced and trained; an evolutionary and contextual understanding of the mind and the brain; the cultivation of mindfulness of one’s own motivations, thoughts, emotions, and behavior; and compassionate mind training through a variety of exercises and home practices. As a CFT trained clinician, I have found this way of organizing the practice of CFT very useful for myself and my clients, and I think it will also be very appreciated by future CFT trainees. Additionally, and in a very coherent manner, the author’s voice throughout the book is warm, friendly, and clear, weaving together key concepts, relevant research, practical exercises, and clinical vignettes, offering a lively idea not only of what this therapy is about but also how this therapy might “feel” as a therapist or as a client.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about compassion and bringing it as a core motivation in their clinical work.

The breadth and depth of CFT is captured here with an accessible structure for those interested in finding out more. Russel Kolts has a deep appreciation of the research that informs the theory while providing us with illustrations putting the theory into practice.

Important Work

This is a highly accessible introduction to compassion-focused therapy -- so clear that even a non-therapist like me can understand it and see how its concepts are applicable to work outside the clinic. At this historical moment, I cannot think of more important work than teaching people to overcome their anger, treat themselves and each other with kindness, and heal relationships and communities. This book is a path forward.
